Imogen, this is a good topic, thanks for introducing it. I keep track of expenditure on clothes and over the past four or five years the total annual spend has been pretty consistent although my salary has changed. That may be because I set a budget for the year and try to stay close to it. But what I am focussing on now is buying clothes that will stay in the wardrobe and not walk out into a charity shop - offsetting the value of donations to charity against the spend on clothes makes me feel better about mistakes, but if I'm honest it's not the most efficient way to give to charity! A small clarification - percent of salary before after tax?
