Alexander Mackenzie was recognized as being one of the most honest prime ministers with the highest integrity. He emigrated to Canada as a teenager and was a stone mason before becoming a journalist and then prime minister. He was self-educated. He was elected as Canada's first Liberal prime minister after Macdonald was caught accepting bribes. He managed Canada though a world-wide depression. He brought in the secret ballot and had a secret stairwell constructed behind his office on Parliament Hill to avoid patronage seekers. Remembering his humble roots, he declined Queen Victoria's offer of knighthood three times.
