The New Rochelle Naval Militia Armory is an important State Landmark. When the City took ownership
of the Armory in 1996, it was accepted along with a Deed of Transference which stated very clearly that
the City was to maintain the building and property and use said building and property for community
purposes. The Armory was in perfectly good shape, and if it had been properly maintained, it would be in
a reasonably good state today. The City, in direct violation of the covenants of the Deed, neglected and
actually hastened the current state of disrepair due to "official vandalism." By right, because of this total
violation of the Armory Deed, the Armory should revert back to the State of New York. The State may
then turn it over to a responsible party, which would be willing to renovate and use this historic building
in a manner which befits a New York State Landmark. Most importantly, in this long and sad story is one
very important fact. The New Rochelle Armory was the only Armory built in New York State specifically as
a Naval Militia Armory. For well over four decades it was The Headquarters of The New York Naval Militia.
Those wielding political power in New Rochelle in relatively recent years are totally incorrect in their
outlook and idea of what is in the best interest of New Rochelle and its people. To totally neglect this
significant , unique and important piece of New York and New Rochelle history is reprehensible and most
unbecoming of anyone holding an office of Leadership in our beautiful City.
