Is downsizing from V-8 to V-6 engines in pickups the right move for automakers?

The option in the pool for diesel engines is not there. So we cannot vote for it.It would have been my first choice. Indeed, I believe that all pick-up trucks should offer a diesel option, in the small engine version, including the smaller pick-up trucks .
I jsut hope that the new Amarok from Volkswagen will finally be introduced in NAmerica: it may open the path to a new approach in the pick-up truck power plants...

It is hard to look for a V6 to do the work of a V8. What happens when we subject the smaller engines to a steady diet of pulling trailers or hauling heavy loads over long periods of time/miles? Conventional wisdom has for years felt that the cheapest most reliable horsepower and torque come as result of more cubic inches. There aren't many 125 pound football players nor are there many 225 pound gymnnasts. Thee is a place an time for everything or size. Hauling grade stakes and water cans V6, heavy loads V8.
