Agree with top two positions, both are superb and changed sci-fi.However Alien the first is the best of that story line, all the rest are very good re-interpretations.Stars Wars, another first in a long line, deserverves to be there. It repopularized sci-fi,and whether or not you enjoyed Lucas's sequels,it stands above remakes like Fly and Solaris and feel good jaunts like E.T. and Back to the Future. The best sci-fi doesnt age Blade Runner,Alien,2001 are still on TV (here in NZ) and almost every sci-fi film/TV show and Cruise/Will Smith vehicle borrows from them.Surprized original Terminator didn't get a spot, maybe an an anti-Arnie bias?Or 80s interpretation of Orwells 1984,too British?Eraserhead, too wierd?Yes its all a matter of opinion,I prefer sci-fi that is darker, rather than moralistic.Obviously advances in CGI etc have made sci-fi more accessible and flashy but alot are now remakes of 50s and 60s stories.Sci-fi in general owes alot to small group of authors Phillip K Dick,Arthur C Clark,Assinov(?),Orwell and a few others Im struggling to spell.Their is a plethora of producers, screenwriters scouring bargain bins in book stores at this very moment, searching for something new to pitch to Hollywood.
