If you didn't live through KISS' heyday, in the mid to late '70's, you can't imagine what they meant to a lot of kids who were bullied and picked on relentlessly, like myself. In contrast to the wimpy shit like John Denver or Barry Manilow, or the disco craze, KISS were dangerous and outraged churches all over the place, especially here in the mid-south. Gene Simmons was wicked beyond description, and dammit, they wrote some great rock and roll tunes, commercialism be damned. "Strutter" and "Let Me Go, Rock n' Roll" were two of the first rock songs I learned to play, and Ace Frehley was my first guitar hero.
I'd come home from the hell hole known as school with not a friend in the world, certainly not in my redneck inbred class and rifle through rock magazines I had not thrown away, or stop at a store and buy the latest Creem, Hit Parader, or whatever to read about my favorite bands and stuff I didn't know about. At least for a while I was in another world away from the stupidity and fear. Only by my senior year did I start having friends who didn't care what the rednecks thought, and I'm eternally grateful to them for accepting me.
I wasn't stupid - I knew KISS was heavily commercialized, but they were still great and will always have a special place in my heart for giving me something to actually want to live for. Far be it from me to diss a band based solely on success. Shadows Fall are not a bad band, but with the exception of lead guitarist Jon Donais, not very original, either.
