I make gun stocks and rasps are used in the initial shaping. I have a farrier's rasp given to me by a friend who shoes horses. The rasp became too dull to use on horse's hoofs but will still take off wood rapidly. From there I go to gradually finer rasps until it is time for the sandpaper.

I literally have a drawer full of files and rasps.
They are definitely essential tools.
