Dexter no longer has any illusions about being "human" which means he acknowledges the fact that he has no remorse or conscience to hold him back or allow him to "pretend" to be a "normal" person. He no longer even believes in the "code"anymore. Even his statement that he's protecting the two people he could have cared about from himself acknowledges the fear that he could very well kill them if the circumstances were right. His running away to the woods in that semi-catatonic state will only fuel the beast inside. Everything has been stripped away except for his "dark passenger" who will eventually want to be fed....
