    I am just wondering. What is it about MARRIAGE that the LGBTs want? What will MARRIAGE do for you? You already are protected by laws that pertain to everyone. (property rights, etc.) Nobody cares what you do in the privacy of your own home, whether you are gay or straight. Most gay people are just normal law abiding citizens. They go to work, pay their mortgage, are good neighbors, and don't want to cause any trouble. Then there are the gays who seem to want to start a conflict everywhere they go, shoving their 'gayness' down everyone else's throat. Demanding one lifestyle, when they have already chosen an opposite lifestyle. I don't understand what will they gain with 'marriage.'

    It is mostly the constitutional principal that judges should not be making the laws. Their job is to interpret them, not overturn what the people have voted.

    Seriously, if you're going to start using the bible for rules then please follow ALL the rules. Don't just pick and choose which ones you want. That means, no children before marriage, no divorce without persecution, and there are several more rules that we are told to abide to like no stealing, adultery, love your neighbors, etc, etc. I don't follow the religion so I don't really know a lot of those rules because I choose to live a positive and happy life with respect and empathy towards others.

    I'm surprised by the utter lack of intelligence in this discussion. Aside from 1-2 comments, NOBODY provided any logical argument…either, it's "equal rights" or religion, insult after insult. A few even equated being gay to race which always amuses me as they are NOWHERE near the same.

    I am so sick and tired of these baseless arguments. The discussion we SHOULD be having is why the hell is Government involved in defining marriage?? Are gay men/women really so insecure that they need the Government to "protect" them. Why do gay men/women receive special protections?? Does that now take away other's rights? You can't have 1 protected class of people without infringing on the "rights" of others not in that group.

    It really doesn't matter who marries who. What matters is that we should be kicking Government out of marriage all together. If a church doesn't want to marry gay couples, that is their ABSOLUTE right. If a property owner does not want to rent to a gay couple, that is their ABSOLUTE right. If a business does not want to provide a service to a gay couple based on their religious convictions, that is their ABSOLUTE right.

    There are plenty of churches and/or bodies that will happily marry a gay couple. There are plenty of businesses that will cater to gay couples/events. However, now that you have Government "protecting" a minority group, the freedoms of others will come into question as is already happening in Santa Fe (Photographer), Oregon/Colorado (Bakers) and soon to be coming to many other cities/states.

    GET GOVERNMENT OUT OF MARRIAGE!

    Would the 4th or 14th amendments allow me to change my race? If I wanted to become an American Indian or African American, legally . . . would I be able to do that? Would that be a 4th or 14th amendment right . . . I think not!. I was born a white male of european decent. (never referred to as a European-American though)

    Marriage was created by God for people to remain devoted to a lifelong relationship and to expand the population of the earth, for whatever reason God has. He didn't ask us if we wanted to participate.

    The government had no reigns on marriage when our Constitution was written. The government, primarily states, saw that they could encourage marriage and offer benefits for marital partners and in turn tax the marital act.

    Marriage was not biblically intended for anything other than a man and a woman, there was no reason, other than monogamy and procreation. That said, as earlier in my statement, I do not believe that I would be able to declare myself an American Indian if I can't prove that my DNA holds that critical, exclusive criteria, giving me all the benefits that are exclusively available to the group legally know as American Indians . . . Yes? i.e. grants, special regulations and tax benefits, court systems, etc. I cannot have them just because I want them . . . I must prove that I qualify for those benefits.

    Therefore, since the rules of marriage were not created by the government, just taxed by them as an income opportunity via the license, does the gay community agree with allowing the government to tax their love, too?

    Would we be so bold as to change God's rules to apply to two men or women who want the benefits of marriage just because they want to have the benefits, whether or not they meet the criteria set up by the creator of marriage . . . God.

    The rules were created by the church through faith in the Bible. So this isn't really a government issue, it's a spiritual issue. The rules were established for spiritual reasons not legal or taxation reasons. The tax and insurance and all the other stuff came later, when the states decided to restrict things that were seen as a danger to society, i.e. influence on the overall community, according to the Word of God.

    However, the restrictions placed on worship and prayer and study of the Bible in our nation, a sacrifice that we will never be able to pay the price for, has now made government the authority, where that authority really belongs to God.

    Whatever your faith, or lack thereof, happens to be, Jesus Christ has forgiven each of us for our sins. Those who extoll the punishment for homosexuality had better take a hard look at their last sin-free day. All sin is the same in His eyes, except one, Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

    Every other sin, the ones you all commit every day, have been purchased by the Blood of The Lamb . . . our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

    If you are buying gifts and giving them day after tomorrow, you're not celebrating a season, you are celebrating the birth and life of the greatest gift ever given to man, The Grace of God Through Jesus Christ.

    How many of you will return all of the gifts you bought because you find that you are celebrating someones birthday that you don't know?

    It's called Christmas and has endured for more than 2,000 years for a reason. That is so whatever your brand of sin may be, if you believe in Him, you're home free . . . gay or not.

    If this sounds like 2 cans of worms, it is. Marriage, as defined by God, and Christmas, as defined by God . . .

    Why the hell would anyone willingly "choose" to live a lifestyle of persecution and ridicule and torture if it truly were a choice. I challenge all you straight "men" to think for a second: "Could I ever even for one second potentially consider choosing to have sex with another man?" I guarantee you the answer is a resounding NO! So in that same way you know it's something you could never "choose" to do, we gay people know in our hearts that having sex with the opposite sex is something we would never do. All you bible quoting people against gay marriage, who is to say that your Gods views and "opinions" are definite and final. There are hundreds of religions out there that all vary in different ways. Who is to say that Christians or LDS or whatever are right. Do yourselves a favor and just let the inevitable happen. This will go the same way interracial marriage went, resistance at first, but then mass exception. Don't live your life with hate, you'll die sooner.

I urge you, if you do not share those American values, then please I beg you to find your heart and chizzle the ice off of it, or find a country that shares your values.     The rights of being a citizen, or civil rights, are rights that don't need to be voted on, nor should they be. This issue mirrors the interracial marriage controversy in the 1960s. I am very disappointed that we have a governor so blind to inevitable progression. We shouldn't be wasting money, as taxpayers, in defending bigotry. I understand that people are passionate about this issue, because their faith doesn't agree with men marrying men or women marrying women. That is completely understandable, but laws and rights have nothing to do with religion. I married my husband in California, and can promise you that marriage and civil unions are completely different. I am the happiest that I have ever been, and am glad more and more people are getting that opportunity. For those on both sides of this issue: I love you all, God loves us all, now let's move on.

    I cannot believe how many people are so focused with what complete strangers do with their lives. You do not control them. You do not suffer or benefit from their presence or their actions. Why would the legalization of gay marriage hurt you? Would you be uncomfortable by the sudden social acceptance of same-sex affection happening in public? Why should they care what you think? All they want is to get married and have it recognized by the state, not ruin your lives.

    And for those of you who do not understand polls, computers, or statistics: nothing is being skewed here. Just because four of you voted against gay marriage in the poll doesn't mean you had enough sway to change the percentages. Especially when there are 14,000+ votes for gay marriage.

You do not get to judge them. You should police yourself. Make sure you're the best person you can be. Everyone else can fend for themselves because their business is NOT your business. If you feel the need to educate people, educate yourself first. Do not gossip or spread rumors because odds are you will say something stupid and ignorant, like how soy is ruining everyone's lives.

    Gay marriage does not affect you unless you are gay. You should not stop same-sex couples from being happy simply because you aren't homosexual, your religion openly discriminates against it, or you are for some reason or another against it. It is not about you. It's about them. It makes absolutely no sense to spend so much time and effort to stop something that doesn't even have anything to do with you.

    the way I see it... Man can write any law they want including this one where Gays can be married but one day these same people will meet the maker( The Lord him self )and try and explain it to him, I wish you luck but this what the bible says about this matter the Lords laws...........Let's take a moment to see what the Bible says about homosexuality and same sex marriage. Let's start by defining homosexuality (yes, believe it or not there are people who will argue about the definition). According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, homosexuality is defined as: "The quality or state of being homosexual" and "erotic activity with another of the same sex".1

    Continuing with that, homosexual is defined as: "Of, relating to, or characterized by a tendency to direct sexual desire toward another of the same sex" and "of, relating to, or involving sexual intercourse between persons of the same sex".2

    The actual term "homosexual" was not invented until the late 1800's, even though the practice has been in existence for thousands of years.

    In Genesis Chapters 18 and 19, we witness the account of Sodom and Gomorrah's destruction due to their sexual perversion. In this account, Lot, the nephew of Abraham, is living in Sodom. Two angels travel to Sodom and after being invited into Lot's house for the night, the house is surrounded by "all the men from every part of the city of Sodom-both young and old… ""They called to Lot, 'Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us so that we can have sex with them.'"

    God never singled out and destroyed any other cities in this manner. The sin of homosexuality was so offensive to God that He annihilated both cities and everyone in them.

    The Book of Leviticus is where God laid down His laws to the Israelites. Homosexuality is addressed in both Leviticus 18:22 and 20:13.
    Leviticus 18:22: "You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination."

    Leviticus 20:13 "If there is a man who lies with a male as those who lie with a woman, both of them have committed a detestable act; they shall surely be put to death. Their bloodguiltiness is upon them."

    Here God is clearly telling the Israelites that homosexuals are so detestable and an abomination to Him that they should be put to death and that their guilt is on their own shoulders.

    Doesn't the bible say don't judge unless you want to be judge? All these comments about gay marriage being wrong honestly make me laugh at the ignorance of uneducated people. The arguments I have read are concerns about the children. We'll let me set your minds at ease....I have two children one came about by having sex with a man. This man then turned around and denied the child and told me he wanted nothing to do with him. My second child is artificial insemination. I've had a domestic partnership and had to fight to end it. Neither of the "parents" are in the picture at this point and neither of the kids want anything to do with them! It's my female fiancé who they want. They have 2 parents who love them unconditionally and are there for them. Neither of them are in danger or neglected. One thing many people don't understand is the fact that gay couples actually WANT their children and have to do a lot to have children instead of just spreading their legs and have an abortion or throwing a child in a dumpster or neglecting their children.

    @R.- You said " Banning same sex marriage is no different than banning interracial marriage"...this is not true. Interracial marriage had to do with the color of the skin, the argument against same sex marriage is that you cannot procreate.

    The big thing everyone needs to wake up to is that our food is being poisoned by the establishment. It is being altered to alter our hormones and health for a reason. Soy, if you read labels, is in almost every product in the grocery stores. Soy is an estrogen mimicker and too much of it for a man demasculines him, gives him man boobs, pot belly- pretty much makes him femmy..and confuses attraction to same sex. Soy does the same for women but also produces breast cancer.

    Who is the establishment? Why would they do this? The elitists, The New World Order people want to bring America down and to do this, they need to break up the family unit. What better way than to make people gay? They also use the divide and conquer technique which you see is working as I see the nasty comments posted here about Mormons being scum, etc. WE as Americans, whether gay or straight need to be fighting against the New World Order, not eachother.

    I prefer the " Don't ask , don't tell policy". But when the homosexual agenda is to force down folks throats that this is an ok practice, and they must teach this to our kindergarteners, etc. then I will stand and protest and shout that this is not right! What you do in your own bedroom is your own business, and between you and God. But when you try to legislate for special rights and try to indoctrinate my children and try to implement coursework in schools that teach that this is right and normal, then I will fight you, the Lesbian/gay community!

    We are living in a time where Right is wrong and wrong is right, you need to pick a side....Hopefully it will be for God, the Family, the Constitution, all theses things is what made America great in the first place. In fact, God gave us this great Nation. And what do we do to show him our thanks? Throw him out of our schools and government and live how we want!

    If you think the law of the land should be identical to the law of your scriptures, then move to a theocratic country. Banning same sex marriage is no different than banning interracial marriage. The arguments are all identical.

    The institute of marriage in only as sacred as each individual couple makes it. 72-hour Hollywood marriages, people cheating on their spouses or divorcing and re-marrying time and time again-- this is all legal, and I don't see how it could be viewed as sacred. If that is your argument, then ought you not want to make divorce illegal and adultery punishable by law?

    Any loving, committed adults should be able to express that love and commitment in the same way, and by the same word. It is no different, and it is not yours to judge.

What ever happened to "god is the only judge" and "love thy neighbor"? I bet god is REAL proud of the judgmental "holier than thou" pieces of crap that live in Utah... Before you call yourselves Mormons and/or Christmas perhaps you guys should read through the bible again... It does say that a man shouldn't lay down with another man but it also says to mind your damn business, not to judge, and to LOVE.

    My name is Ashleigh. I came out as a lesbian in the 9th grade. And couldn't be anymore happier, it shouldn't matter the sex, nor color, you all should be ashamed of your self to think that same sex is not right. It shouldn't matter if we are same sex, or man and women we should all have the same rights. This is america. For those who are not okay with it, I apologies for your miss understanding of the bible, and our constitution. For those who are with me on equal rights I really do appreciate it, because one day I will get married in the state of Utah, and if you didn't know look it up Utah has the most lesbian/gay whatever you call it people in utah. And just because we like same sex doesn't mean we are not human a we should be recognized just like what you consider normal. Ps out of every 7 people someone is gay/lesbian. But all I have to say is I will not bash on anyone against it because that is not right and I would not want them to bash on me. I just hope you look with your eyes unstead being blind. This is all human . I will fight for my rights as an American, to be equal and I will fight and be heard until something changes.

    So many of you say a Judge should not have the right to change something the people said they wanted. My question to you is "Why should the government have the right to change a sentence of someone incarcerated by the people" Probation, prison or the death sentence? The government should NOT be aloud to give people a pardon!!!!!

    It is not the place of the courts to determine the status of such a pivotal social issue. If the people of Utah, by their majority and through the appointed legislative process, agreed that homosexual marriages should not be legal, a single judge exerting undue influence should not be the means of changing this law.

    As a non LDS but follower of Christ, gay marriage should not be allowed ! We should love our neighbor as Christ would ,hate the sin not the sinner ! God has unconditional love for us all just as most of us parents have for our children . If your gay and reading this pray ask for gods will for your life .     I am a Mormon and love everyone it doesn't matter if your straight or gay you should be treated with respect like everyone should the judge who overturn the decision should be congratulated because he took and looked at everything and took his time deciding to treat everyone with divinity and love, so for a long time there wasn't a place for gay or lesbian in the church and just recently the mormon church has welcomed them in our church and they are caring people too so people need to get off there soapbox and get with the times and be more loving and caring to everybody like you would be treated I have a cousin who is gay and I respect her and she had to move out of state because we were close minded as a state, yes I believe in equal rights for all and the governor should look at the recent poll in keeping with judge stanley decision and don't waste tax payers dollars on this when it can be used elsewhere because this is the law and it should be the law and just let it rest governor Herbert because people can change their minds and know over 70% percent of the people has said it is legal and fair and square now then 60 percent less than 2 years ago said marriage should be between a man and women it is not written in any text book and law that says nobody can't marriage who the want man or women, young and old, man/man,women/women, gay, straight or lesbian so the government should stay out of this issue and start fixing the country's problems and the state problems. So wake up Utah and nation and treat everybody equal it doesn't matter if your nationality they come to America to be free and to speak their mind and to walk without somebody telling you you can't walk or sit there so let them have peace and joy in their union and stay out of their business and their lives, let them move forward and don't look back.

    I think marriage should be available to anyone. And Don't quote bible stuff. I can quote things from books people wrote as well. Let people love and marry whomever they want. Isn't this supposed to be "Land Of The Free" ? They give free away to everything else, why not allow marriage between two PEOPLE, and have sex play no part in it :)

The comment you left doesn't sound like a Christian, and all the religious people in this state think they have to have 8 or more children. Which makes those of us with one or two has two pay there way in public schools by paying more taxes. As far as I'm concerned as long as it's not thrown in my face I feel that people should be able to marry who they want and it's no buddies business

    They have the right to be together yes! But calling it "marriage" is not right!
    Why can't they have a civil union or something? Give them ALL the rights we ALL have but DON'T call it "MARRIAGE"! OR change the naming of it for men and woman! I'll settle for a civil union between man and woman but DO NOT call it the same as same sex!

    I'm tired of us voting and making our voices heard and because people don't like the outcome they have to throw a fit like a 2 year old. Heck I don't like Obama got re-elected yet the courts won't allow us to revote to get what we want. The government should stay out of the marriage laws and if I remember correctly when the pilgrims came over it was to worship God. If you don't like the way this country is run then go to another one and see how many rights you'll get.

    I have known same sex couples that have been together for decades and have remains committed to each other. To say that a child needs a mother AND father in the home is rediculous! So every single parent or every widowed parent is unfit? Get real. Same axe couples are just as capable of raising a loving and we'll adjusted child as any hetero couple is. What a person does in the privacy of their own home is not your concern. And a gay couple has one advantage...they know the bigotry and discrimination that has been shown to them and have the opportunity to teach their children the value of loving everyone and respecting everyone for that reason. I say go for it! I support you and applaud you for your courage.

    Yes there should be separation between church and state, but who are we to judge? God is the only judge for we are in the last days and the minority has become the majority. Satan has a very strong hold on our world. We should not judge but pray for our fellow man/women, pray for God's mercy on us all

    For those that say that it should be outlawed, I ask a simple question. Why?
    1. If you say it is against the bible- Separation of church and state is the basis of the constitution.
    2. If you say marriage is for procreation- Then why allow people that can not have children wed? Should there be a fertility check on all marriages and who would pay for them?
    3. If you say marriage is an infringment on your religion- This one is complete BS. If anything it is infringment on the people seeking marriage to do so. Churches will still have the ability to denounce same sex marriage and will still have the ability to say 'no' to cerimonies conducted by their ministers.
    4. If you say it degrades society- By shunning people into a second class tthat denies them rights, it only allows for more stereotypes and misunderstanding. People said the same thing about racial integration, and history has proven them to be on the wrong side.
    5. It is a "gross" or some derivative of that- I personally do not care what happens behind closed doors, and extreme public displays of affection (no matter if it is same sex or straight) are still not socially acceptable and gross. Why should you or anyone else care what they do in thier private time?
    6. It affects children- The effect of same-sex marriage on children has not been proven to my knowledge, but what has been proven is the effect of single-parenting has had. Statistically, children from single parents have a much harder time in life than those that have two parents.
    7. It was enacted by a majority vote- the constitution protects the minority from the majority in cases of civil liberty, otherwise segregation would still be the law.

    If there are any others, and I am sure there are, then feel free to say them. I am positive that people far more intelligent than I will be glad to respond in kind. Also, as a side note please excuse the typos and misspellings, typing on an iPad keyboard is very difficult.

    Well looking at the poll results thus far (1:28 am) 1,823 or 68% of people who have vote say that it should be extended to same sex so either those who feel it's "wrong" aren't voting or they are actually showing compassion for their fellow man and not judging like the bible teaches

    I have been raised by lesbians since I was 8, I'm now 25 I have had a better life with two mother's then with a mother and a father! They are people who deserve to be happy and have the right to get married. If you don't like it then butt out, its not your life!

    Everybody surely deserves to have their own feelings and all but why over turn it cause the next state did? Its wrong what's next are ya all going to legalize pop too cause some other state did? No i don't have big colleges under my belt and i dont have a high paying job but but i've got enough brains to know that it is wrong. I don't agree with it at all and i never will. Marriage is between a man and a woman not two men or two women. Its wrong in gods eyes and it shouldn't be allowed. How are their children going to be treated? You know as well as i do that they always suffer. So what's next is a man going to be able to have as many dang wives as he wants? That makes me feel so comfortable knowing that the state that i live in as come to a new low. Just make it legal to shut them up!!!!! Talk about pure pressure. Its just plain sick and. And shouldnt be allowed. That's my story and im sticking to it and i don't need to phone a friend

    There's plenty of people in the world who are man and woman who cannot create life. Are you going to ban them from being married, Mr. Ben Dover? It does not matter your preferenc in sex, it's love all the same. You people who judge and talk down on others are the ones who will be punished in the long run. As far as your children go, someone else's relationship will not make a difference in the way they grow up! Don't like gay marriage... Don't get married to your same gender. Get your own life and quit worrying about how others are living theirs. iSupport!! I'm so happy for the people who got married today and will start their journey with their partner :)

    People are people regardless of who you love. i think that religion and Mormons are the "scums" as you want to say. Gays/Lesbians do not go around degrading and demolishing Mormons and their religion yet Religion is quick to jump on how its a sin and they are bad people. Who is a gay hurting? your feelings? GET OVER IT!! You say "love one another" and "treat your neighbor as you would want to be treated" Yet you do the exact opposite! You only love one another if they believe what you believe. and you only treat your neighbor the way you would want to be treated if they weren't gay, I think that makes YOU A SINNER! Everyone as the right to love who they want and MARRY who they want. I say this judge deserves an award for standing up for the Gays/Lesbians. HOWEVER, I do not agree with extra privileges. The judge should not have stayed open late rather doing it on working hours. If a man and woman can get made (privilege) you are saying you are better then a woman/woman man/man and they are less human who don't deserve that Privilege. Doesn't that make you just as wrong?! Stop being so closed minded. it doesnt affect you at all!! Stay out of others business! LIVE AND LET LIVE!!!!!! PEOPLE ARE PEOPLE!!!!!!!

    Love is love. The outpouring of hate and ignorance I see in these comments is what should be illegal. Men and women can procreate with the help of science, so our already over-full earth is in now way going to empty out due to this ruling. This is a huge step in the right direction for Utah and ALL of it's citizens. Thank you, Judge, for putting hate, ignorance and religious based laws in their rightful place - nowhere near our legal system.

    It's just like porn, if you don't like it and don't want to see it, and are disturbed by it, don't watch it! Have you ever lied, stolen, cheated, done anything wrong against Gods will? If so, you will face your maker one day and face the consequences. God is the only one whom can legally judge man and woman. I am in main stream religion here in Utah and find myself extremely upset that my brothers and sisters continually judge those that they feel are indifferent or wrong in their eyes. Those who are gay are my brothers and sisters in the eyes of the Lord. I do not judge or condemn you. We were all born to be different and have free agency, so it's time we allow Gods plan to prevail without our own self centered judgments.
