Wood is good. Painted wood is appropriate if there is no discernible grain, like poplar, or if the grain is unattractive like common pine. If the top is not wood, say marble, the go ahead and paint the base even if it is nicely grained. If you do paint, be creative. Use wahes, glazes, distressing. Anything that makes the piece distinctive.
