Our investigative team has documented the pitfalls in the state’s costly disability system for injured police and firefighters. What reforms would you support?

Cap disability leave at two years. After that, those who cannot return due to injury should be permanently retired, with a pension appropriate to their status.

Create a two-tiered system. First responders injured in high-risk, “line of duty” circumstances should receive a higher pension benefit than others.

Keep it as it is. Some may abuse the system, but the people who run toward danger should be compensated for their work on the public’s behalf.

Lets not forget the first responders that are shot, burned, run over and sustain many other horrific injuries. There is always a percentage of people cheating and taking advantage of the system. Many of them will be caught and we should continue to impose rules that will flush them out.
