Will you pay $18.50 to go to the Assiniboine Park Zoo after the Journey to Churchill exhibit opens?

The Assiniboine Park Conservancy is a NON-PROFIT organization. Meaning they are not looking to make money off of us visitors more than what is necessary to upkeep the park and zoo. It takes money to properly feed and care for all of the animals in the park. Starting July 3rd there will be 10 dollar Tuesdays which will help people that might not be able to pay the full rate to visit the zoo. This price is exactly in line with other Canadian zoos that have the same or even less to offer. As well, think about everything else the park offers, the gardens, conservatory and nature playground...all FREE. This zoo is finally getting the care and upkeep it deserves! Who wants to visit a run down zoo? I'd rather pay for a lovely experience that lasts me the whole day! Lets stay positive Winnipeg!

I think everybody just wants it all, they want better care and habitats for the animals, but don't want the zoo to try and pay for it. If anybody knows anything about the zoo is that there have been a number of incredibly generous donations towards the project and they are always working towards more donations. The fact of the matter is that with this price increase you really aren't paying that much more to the zoo. The projected increase in income for the zoo will completely turn the tables as to how the place pays for its wonderful attractions, from as much as 70% funded by the government (YOUR MONEY) with the improvements and the increase in both visitors and cost of entry, the zoo has switched that number to 70% being paid for by the zoo itself and only 30% by the Gov. I don't know how people can neglect the fact that going to the zoo averages between 3-4 hours of outdoor, physical and educational experience for 18.50. All these people can all can the complaints and poor me's about the admission because im sure most of you go to the movies, and the last time I went to the movies I paid... 19 dollars after concession for a bad movie and 1.5 hours.

You can still go to Assiniboine park and enjoy free, fun time with your family. Animals and their care cost money. Would you bloody winers prefer to have general tax revenue cover the cost? Yes, Cheryl money is important - would you go to work and not get paid? Wake up winers, if you don't want to pay, don't go. The zoo is FINALLY getting much needed upgrades. Geeez - shut up already.

  • joe - 10 years ago

Yeah right they spend so much in improving this zoo but do you think Winnipegers are rich enough to afford this as a majority? I mean, our salary never had so much increase and we are still stuck on the most taxed province so here goes another money grabber. Thanks but no thanks. You can keep your zoo and ill keep my hard earned dollar.

  • Marco - 10 years ago

I am excited to see the new exhibit and all the hard work that was done at the zoo. As per usual many cheap Winnipeggers are complaining. Time to get with the times and understand it costs money for the much needed upgrades as the zoo was starting to get stale and the animals definitely need and deserve more room especially the bears. Considering many zoos are more expensive and charge for parking not a bad price. Hope it deters some of the whiners and complainers.

I do not like the price increase. Its as shocking as it was when we brought the kids to the children's museum and had to pay over $50 for our family of 4. I understand that the zoo had to pay for the upgrades, I get it, but why not ask for donations instead from all of those willing people who can afford to pay the huge increase? If they are so willing and okay with paying that price then let them. But don't deny the children whose parents can't afford a $60 day out a chance to experience the zoo. Its unfair and unfortunate that my children won't be able to experience the zoo as I remember it as a child. We used to go almost every weekend, now I would be surprised if we went this year at all.

It IS a huge increase. Will I be visiting the zoo as often? Not likely. I will take my kids once for sure after the exhibit opens so we can see it. But for people to be saying that its a cash grab or that all they want is money...well YES! How else is the zoo able to pay for it? Use your heads people! You complain how crappy it was before, well now it wont be, and you think thats done for free?! It would be nice if the animals have something slightly closer to their natural habitats instead if tiny little cages. It costs money to run a zoo! Hello! Would you rather see the animals starving in tiny cages for a lesser cost?! Then I suggest you go to Indonesia or something!

Ten dollar Tuesday will make it cheaper for low income families as well there are other discounted offers and a family membership. Winnipeg is a cheap city and we need to understand that our zoo was in such a bad state because there was no money going into it. Finally it will be world class and it has to cost more as the city is pulling 4 million dollars next year that it depended on. The zoo has to survive on its own and I am proud to help contribute by visiting. i can spend the whole day there withe my kids where they can see first hand animals from other countries that I can't afford to take them to see. It will teach them the value of a first hand experience you can't get from a movie or online. On my last trip we learnt about the conservation efforts our zoo takes and with out it our world will loose more species. People need to see the value in what they are creating. So now with the increase maybe most families can only come once a year instead of multiple time but the experience that we will have will be so much better with the improvements that will make it worth it. Suck it up Winnipeg and support the zoo's efforts.

I will go but I do understand that it will be tough for some people if they have too big of a family. I would hope there is a family package that will be offered. Having said that I think the zoo is a wonderful place to spend time and I look forward to going. They need to pay the expenses some how and these animals do have to eat, staff has to be paid and grounds need to be kept up. In all reality, where can you go for an entire day of entertainment for this cheap. So many people will spend 20 or 30 bucks on junk food for their kids and then complain how expensive everything is....... spend it here instead pack a nice picnic lunch and have quality family time

The only city remotely comparable in size to Winnipeg with a decent sized zoo is Edmonton. We as seniors on fixed incomes used to take our granddaughter to the zoo in the past, but this drastic increase in admission unfortunately will force us to pursue other entertainment.
Is this increase the repercussion of not getting the 4M grant from the city of Winnipeg? So be it, we need infrastructure repaired much more than we need to hand over our cash to the zoo.
I watch the CEO of the Zoo on Global this morning attempting to do damage control, her explanation as to why this admission hike is needed was weak and unacceptable.

Sadly as much as we would like to go, the new price increase will put it or of our league for a leisure day activity. A family of 4, that's 2 adults and 2 kids will be just shy of $60! And that is not including picnic lunch or concessions. Call me cheap but $60 is a lot of money to the average family.

The polar bear exhibit alone is worth the extra $10. Finally something world class.

  • Lisa - 10 years ago

My family & I are very excited to go to the zoo and see the new exhibit and all the improvements! The price is not too crazy. I mean how do you expect that they pay for such an incredible exhibit?? just like everything else in life, prices have to go up. I am sure that it will be enjoyed by many. :) WTG Assiniboine Park!

  • Sandy Bernhard - 10 years ago

How do low income families take their children to the zoo? These high priced exhibits are geared to people with $$$'s to spare and that is very sad.

  • Darlene - 10 years ago

We are very excited for all the changes at the zoo! People need to understand that in order to improve the enclosures for the animals and bring in more attractions, the park needs to raise prices. We need to support the great work that they do and be proud of the world class exhibit that is about to open. We have enjoyed watching the changes these last few years and look forward to the future!

  • Jeff Dupont - 10 years ago

We will still go but maybe once a year. It seems all activities in the city of Winnipeg are becoming activities for the rich

  • Dave C - 10 years ago

These increases are just a money grab,The zoo should be ashamed at the gouging that is proposed.Grab grab grab as usual make it prohibitive for most Winnipegers and their families to have a day out Shame on you all.

  • Lori - 10 years ago

Can hardly wait until it opens, The Journey To Churchill is going to be a fantastic tourist attraction.

  • Angee - 10 years ago

Journey to Churchill is going to be amazing, so it is fair to rise the pricess on admissions. If you go to anywhere else in Canada (attraction) it is around 15-20 dollars.

  • Laura - 10 years ago

winnipegers are so cheap! we're going to have the worlds best ever polar bear enclosure I am personally very excited to see it and support it

  • Tara - 10 years ago

This increase is ridiculous. The attractions certainly do not warrant this increase. The last time I was at the zoo, the majority of the animals were not even around to be seen and I thought the rates were high then for what we saw. Very disappointing that something that was somewhat affordable before is no longer affordable for the majority of families.

  • Lynn - 10 years ago

As a single income family with four kids, the zoo used top be one of the few things we could afford.... this is absurd.

  • Liz - 10 years ago

This park is not high end. They have not done hardly any work to it for how many years? For a lot of one income families, there is no way they could afford this. Even if it was 2 income family, they still can't afford this. I could see if they had different packages " family of 4 $35.00, Family of 6 $55.00" Then maybe it would be affordable. Seniors can't afford these great big prices, Seniors & children under 5 should be free !! Adults should be around $10.00 and children over 5-17 should be around $5-6.00. If they charge too much, nobody will go and they will end up in the red!!!!

  • Marguerite Lussier - 10 years ago

Well, so much for grandma and grandpa paying the way in for the kids and grandkids. Even for just the two of us, my husband and I, we'd have to pay over $40 when all is said and done? Really? Way too much of a hike. I've worked all my life and I've seen a few raises in my lifetime but NEVER ever that much of a raise in my pay. Let's see now, a daughter, son in law, two grandkids, us, um... over $100 !!!! GET SERIOUS!!! Way too much...

  • Matt L. - 10 years ago

This is not an outlandish price. With all the upgrades that were desperately needed, the zoo will now be a more interactive attraction. The stereotypical Winnipegger will complain about this price, but in the end, they will all attend just to see the new Journey to Churchill exhibit. I can't wait to re-new my family annual pass...regardless of the price. #Don'tBeCheap

  • cheryl - 10 years ago

Are you kidding, the zoo used to be there for families. They could go and enjoy some quality time with their children. Now it seems that MONEY is more important. You should just become part of the US if that is the case.
