How should the state handle edTPA – or “education teacher performance assessment” – testing for college students who are just entering the teaching profession?

Toss it. The edTPA doesn’t determine good teaching. Their student teaching tells more than this “snapshot.”

Delay edTPA’s required passage for a couple years, like Common core. It’s not fair to throw a high-stakes test at student-teachers with little warning.

Stop the handholding. Make candidates pass the test and prove their skills before they teach our kids.

edTPA greatly interferes with student teachers' learning, and the videos cannot possibly show more than the multiple, full-40-minute lesson observations, with follow-up conversations, that have been regular parts of teacher education practice for decades. That this has become a high-stakes certification requirement is serious blow to the development of strong, new teachers.
