Could "The Lord of the Rings" be published in today's marketplace?
Definitely. As C.S. Lewis wrote, "The book is like lightning from the sky."
Likely. As A.E. Cherryman wrote, "It is an amazing piece of work. Tolkien has added something, not only to the world's literature, but to its history."
50/50 chance (but, only if edited to include women). As Edwin Muir wrote, "The hobbits...are ordinary boys; the fully formed heroes...hardly know anything about women, except by hearsay."
Little chance. With a 5,000 copy sell-through currently a hallmark of success, no publisher today would take the risk.
No chance. The pace of the narrative, multiple characters, & focus on faux-medieval world-building would tax the patience of today's readers.
