The VA hospitals should be closed as most of the fed gov't should be closed. Federal employees are the highest paid civil servants in the world. Nasa employees, for example, earn on average $98,000 per year, then there are the benefits. This is not just the scientists...but AVERAGE...from the sweepers to the Administrators. Its a SICK joke that the gov't squanders BILLIONS...while they say" we don't have the cash" and borrow $50,000 PER MINUTE from our enemies ( Russia, China...any one who will buy Treasury bonds). NO we DON"T need the VA hospitals. Close them...they are twice or more expensive to run than a conventional hospital. NYC sanitation, police and fire workers have struck a deal...via their corrupt unions...that there is pay parity. That means that when one gets a raise the other two get the same. I met a retired sanitation manager at a dinner. He was earning $150,000 per year when he retired after 20 yrs service. He told me as soon as the sanitation man is vested he is making $100,000 / yr. No wonder the cities like Detroit are declaring bankruptcy. How do you expect retail workers making $8 per hour to support the garbage man making $100,000 per year? That is why the taxes on home owners are ridiculous. Long Island police have been earning $100,000 per year for many years since they were told that if they had a college degree they could get the money. So, you go to the community college, get an AAS degree in Criminology...and you earn $100,000 per year. NICE...no wonder more and more people are leaving the USA to live overseas in countries where the cost of living is affordable....CLOSE THE VA hospitals and the other agencies wasting our taxpayer dollars....
In the time of universal health care, the merging of local hospitals , and interactive internet communication, it seems archaic for us to continue to support and administer a completely separate healthcare system for a specialized, widely scattered population. I do believe we should give our veterans the best possible health care and insurance as possible, but it seems to me that a separate, poorly funded, insufficiently supervised system is no longer the answer.

Convicted felons get to use local hospitals at no cost to them, so why can't those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom utilize local health care facilities? It should be a no-brainier.
If you truly support vets make sure they can get the necessary medical attention they need.
