I wouldn't be too quick to say the Sabres won't trade him. As a Sabres fan I think the new regime under Tim Murray would be happy to get rid of him, as there just isn't room for him here. The question would be what is a fair value for him. The Sabres don't HAVE to move him; if the price was right they could move any of the players mentioned in the article except for Reinhart and Girgensons.
I would bet that the Sabres will see how next year's draft lottery shakes out and package Grigerenko and two of their 1st Rd picks to get up as high as second, if they don't win the McDavid Sweepstakes outright (or maybe even if they do... would be quite a coup to get both McDavid AND Eichel, and the Sabres have the assets to make it happen).
