I have fitted my swather with a pickup reel of course and lifters, mounted a foot apart. If the ground is dry and not stony, you can set the lifters to touch the ground. Come at the crop at right angles if possible so you can make a good job both ways. There should be nothing left behind.

I've done both in the past; there's no real right answer. If you have the manpower to swath it while you are combining your canola, I would suggest swathing as much as you can to speed up your over all harvest.

If its ripe and your land isn't rocky....Down gaurds and one less expense...Have done both ...Staightcut
