What kind of NY gubernatorial debate do you want?

Howie Hawkins, the Green Party candidate, should be included in any debates for governor of New York. Two polls taken in early September prior to the Democratic primary show Hawkins polling at 12% in congressional districts 19 (Hudson Valley) and 21 (North Country). Hawkins is running a serious, statewide campaign and by any fair and objective standard, he should be included in any debates with Governor Cuomo and his Republican challenger, Rob Astorino.

This weekend Hawkins and the Green Party are helping to mobilize New Yorkers to participate in the largest climate change march in history in New York City to demand action by the UN Climate Summit on global warming. Hawkins is the only candidate for governor calling for 100 percent clean and renewable energy in New York state by 2030. This includes a ban on hydrofracking, no new fossil fuel infrastructure, immediately shutting down Indian Point, and phasing out all nuclear power plants in New York.

While Coumo and Astorino quibble about which football team is their favorite, Hawkins wants to talk about the issues. He calls his platform a Green New Deal for New York, which features public jobs for the unemployed, a $15 minimum wage, single payer health care, taxing the rich and lowering taxes for working people, fully funded public education from universal pre-K to tuition-free CUNY and SUNY, ending high-stakes testing, increasing public investment in affordable housing and public transportation, and ending the war on drugs.

The Green Party doesn't take corporate donations, so the only way that Howie Hawkins can get his message in front of the voters is to be included in debates. Hawkins came in third out of seven candidates in 2010 and secured a ballot line for the Green Party without riding the coattails of another party's candidate. New York progressives should not have their candidate excluded from the debates.

I'm OK if other candidates join the debates; but I do wanna see at least one 1-on-1 debate between the two major candidates, Cuomo and Astorino, as well as 1 debate between the Lieutenant Governor candidates. In 2010, "Rent is Too Damn High" was a major distraction.
