That's great to see Portland as one of the higher tipping cities. Although, people need to understand, serving is a hard, stressful job. Servers only make on average $3.77 an hour- paid by the employer, and we work for our tips. And I'm sure the better service, the more likely you're apt to get that 20% tip, but when you bust your butt to make someone happy, and only make 10-15%, it's very frustrating. Especially when foreigners don't understand the American tipping system. Not to mention, we also have to tip out bussers and bartenders, usually 10% of our "take home wages," or 3% of our alcohol sales or 10% of our total food sales. So on slow nights, sometimes we barely make minimum wage. I've worked in all kinds of restaurants, from McDonald's to diners, to golf clubs, to chains to fine dining. Doesn't matter how upscale the establishment is, please tip accordingly. :)
