Money and status has created this problem so, that it will fix. The UN shall sanction ALL countries to pitch in a portion of their valued GDP and pay poachers more to pick up arms and protect than what they are already getting paid to harm. When citizens of the World begin to realize through their government/corporate pocketbooks that ecological diversity does not stop at boarders and we as a World Nation are suffering as ONE and TOGETHER, then efforts will be made to slow that pocketbook drain. Suddenly, there will be a shift in the reliance of perceived human compassion as a form of problem solving to harnessing the power of steadfast human selfishness and greed.
Harvesting rhino horn "to save the rhino" is the most absurd concept. Firstly, it will not stop the poaching because the most sought after and valuable part of the horn is the fibrous base. Secondly, it can only be done using harsh morphine based drugs that put the rhinos life at risk every time. Third, this will lead to the demise of rhinos in the wild.
Other reason why not: Rhino horn contains an amino acid (phenylalanine) that has been implicated in causing Autism and should not be imbibed by humans. Rhinos need their horn for survival and behavioural reasons. The actual population number of rhinos is less than assumed, deliberately kept inflated by pro-traders. Etc. etc.
Much better to concentrate on horn devaluation through treating it with toxins (Rhino Rescue Project), demand reduction campaigns and intensified law enforcement. The South African government has been side-tracked by the possibility of trading horn, and is not doing what it should, nor what it could, to properly protect this important species.
