Was The Street Harassment Video Racist?

I don't think people understand that, even if there were more white men in that video racist wouldn't give a fuck. And when this whole thing blows over, some of the black men that are offended by this video are going to turn around and start shiting on some of the black women who were also angry. Which brings me to my next point. If this video had a black woman in it instead, some of these black men would be even angrier.

Also, bringing up Jessica Williams rubbed me the wrong way. If she wasn't on the Daily Show, a lot of people wouldn't know who she is. I guess what I'm saying is that I would like for us to be able to support creative black people with out having to tear somebody else down and for them to be cosigned by a white person.

I think it is very presumptuous for someone to call the video racist because then you would have to call the whole experiment racist. If you can't prove that they target areas only inhabited by minorities then you have to be quiet. My theory is that Rob Bliss just took the most outrageous ones and they happened to be niggas. I know firsthand that niggas are way more flamboyant in these streets when they are trying to holla at a woman.

Also, street harassing is a tool used by bitch ass niggas. All they are doing is hedging their bets. If she says something back then you good. If she keeps moving then you claim that you were just saying hi. Those guys are just scared. They probably wouldn't approach women if their boys weren't around egging them on.

    Hey Karen and Rod,

First I switched it up cause well why not. Your street harassment talk was really good. For a while I was one of those men who was like this is anti black men ect. While I still have some of those feelings I just started to talking to women in my life. They enlighten me and I adjusted my opinions. I thought the same thing about the video then they acknowledged that it looks like mostly black men but it was all races. There isn't more to say about it. The understood the optics addressed the issue. Most of the brothers complaining about that either didn't watch the whole thing or didn't read that article. I live in a city with a small black population and many of us want to build a stronger community. I have made it a point to speak to black folks (male or female) on the street. After seeing this and hearing women address men saying hello. I am going to rethink my position. I don't think it is that hard for dudes to be like maybe what I think is harmless is harmful. Just step outside of yourself for one minute.

I can see why people would think the impression the this makes men of color look like some thirsty would be rapists. And, frankly, social justice for profit is becoming a norm( see Suey Park).

But honestly, it really shouldn't matter. The point is that unless she's on a stage at a booty club, no woman (and no man for that matter) wants to be an object. Don't cat call, that's it.

Having a sister and female cousins has taught me that women have the right to see every man they don't know as a potential sexual predator. And seeing as my cousin was killed, yes, KILLED, by her husband on Christmas Day - I really don't see how cats can't understand that "hollering" at women on street is creepy and uncomfortable. This perspective has been reinforced over the last few years living in California.

I lived in West Hollywood, CA - one of the gayest places on earth. Its bizarro world for straight guys. And even there, where gay white men are the majority, men rarely get cat called on the streets. I've seen dudes literally dancing shirtless and with cut off daisy dukes to advertise for a law firm. Nobody was trying to holler at dude on the street - EVER.

And living in West Hollywood, where I have had dudes stare at my ass and uncomfortable looks in the shower, I got a slight glimpse at the kind of sexist nonsense women go through.

Also, I had to relearn this from my wife. I was walking back from my car with my friend and said hey to my wife as she was walking back with the groceries. It was dark in the parking lot. I said, "Hey, let me help you with the groceries". My wife curtly said "No" and ran away. Now, mind you, this is my wife. And I'm about as threatening a teddy bear. But, because she couldn't see clearly in the dark she just saw to Niggas coming towards her.

Here's my rule - if you wouldn't feel comfortable someone doing something to your momma, your sister, your daughter or your wife - don't do it any woman. Cappa Out.
