He did the right thing. Without Patel no India. Also, its not Indira Gandhi - it is Indira Jehangir Ghandy. Why leech on Mahatma Gandhi's brandimage?

Modi has shown his true colors of intolerance and ethical bias. He is a racist at heart. His ideology will destroy the very fabric that created a unified tolerant independent india compared to messed up Pakistan. I ask: what would Sardar V Patelji have done on a day like this? Would he have disrespected and ignored the contribution & sacrifices made by Nehru and Indira Gandhi or other leaders? Did he not treat political opponents with respect? Did he not stand with the Mahatma for nonviolence? Does our PM stand for nonviolence?? We have chosen and voted. The youth will bear the fruits of our choices.

Good job Mr Modi. Keep it up. Congress has killed, looted and used India. We do not need Fake Gandhi's. These Gandhi's have no moral's. They are even lying about their religion, which is totally unacceptable for India.
All the hospitals, institutions named behind these d*ffers should be changed.

Irrespective of political differences PM Modi should have attended the memorial. Differences aside, she was after all powerful lady prime minister. One should respect that.

You can differentiate a good leader with a politician from situations like this. Even Atalji praised Indira for her courage during Bangladesh war and Atalji attended this event when he was Prime Minister. I am sure lot of senior BJP leaders are not happy with his behavior either.

I think PM Modi's political colors are starting to show up. He talks about national unity run and leaves thousands of Congress workers by this gesture. After all these congress party workers are also part of India and we all need to come together not only BJP workers/supporters. That wont make up national unity. I am hoping he might correct that in future.

"...In the same country, 30 years ago, on the birth anniversary of the same leader something happened which cast a blow to the unity of the nation.

"Hamare apne logon ko maut ke ghaat utar diya gaya (our own people were killed on that day. That incident was not a wound in the heart of any community. It was a dagger in the centuries-old fabric of India's unity," he said.

Finally someone had the courage to say this.............Well Done Mr. Modi!!!

Mr Modi could have attended the Indira Gandhi's Memorial event... If he can remember what Patelji did for India. He could have shown respect what Indirji did for INDIA.. This is not rite or wrong direction for youth. This is just a respect for our best leaders what they did for us. Yes it is the first big minus for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

nobody can underestimate the contribution of Sardar Patel to building of modern India. He was a congress leader. Many congress leaders sacrificed equally for the development of the nation. But unfortunately the successive governments failed to focus all those leaders. Nehru was a towering personality who contributed to the overall progress of the nation. Indira Gandhi sacrificed her life for the nation. No other family has served and suffered so much for the nation. People may differ politically. People may not approve many of their decisions. But nobody should underestimate their sacrifices. I am not a congressman. But I respect those leaders and salute them. Simply because Patel is from Gujarat and in order to focus a personality against Nehru legacy Mr. Midi is taking up a failed attempt. Let him be magnanimous and celebrate all the national leaders irrespective of religion, state and party. As PM it is his duty to have gone to Shakthi Sthal today. I think at least hereafter he may not repeat the mistakes of congress.

Man is a combination of good plus bad. Varies in proportion. Everyone decides the weightage to his discretion. .PM is more responsible to time, priorities and his message. When it is two leaders he has to talk about, choice is the one about whom prejudiced history is not fair. Patriotic efforts of wisdom to strengthen the cementing forces of unity demands better exposure to dictatorial violence and supression of own citizens rights. History should reveal the good and bad realities of past events. He has not judged the leadeers but left it to others bringing out some supporting facts welcome on the significant day of Ektha Diwas.

Our PM understands history, as he understands the pulse of the people; and he is determined to work for the people, even if it is unpopular with politicians. It takes a lot of moral courage & conviction of heart for PM to stand up for what he believes is right; therefore, he would not be swayed by immature criticisms of people who fails to discern PM's goal oriented approach to lead the Nation.

    Very Immature!
There is a time for Politics and this day was not for that.
Especially,if you want to unite the people. Such actions don't.
Whether you agree of not with PM Indira Gandhi's Policies, she was killed while serving her country. She should be remembered/honored on this day. Modi failed today!

He lacks respect for other leaders & his comments shows how narrow mind person he is. He has not respected Patel with true intention- it's only due to RSS . Both the leaders need to be given a respect due to the service they rendered to the nation. He has to grow up to lead the true India and prove- coz they have already proved.

While I appreciate prime minister Modi extending honour to Sardar Patel on his birth aniversary, which the latter deserves, I disapprove Mr Modi skipping dealth anniversary at Sakti Sthal, which even Mr Atal Behari Vajpayee had attended. This appears to be a deliberate move by Mr Modi which I condemn.

  • C.V.PASUPATHY - 9 years ago

Both are iron leaders of Independence India. But Patel is senior to Indira Gandhi. So he respected by BJP PM Modi on his birth aniversary of Sardar Vallabhoy Patel. But no other leaders respected India's Iron Man of Independence India. This is noted with displeasure.

Did congress ever celebrate a non Nehru/Gandhi leader's memories...? Don't remember it happening in the last 10 years. So what if the current leadership skips it once? Also, if Mr. Modi skipping Mrs. Gandhi's remembrance looks negative shall we say congress not remembering non Nehru/Gandhi leaders with same fervour as Nehru /Gandhi leaders as also disrespectful? If a certain leadership believes respectful towards a certain type of leaders...so be it. I think it is OK as long as there is no disrespect for rest of the national leaders.

This is the first big minus for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Hope he does not do such blunders again. If he respects earlier Prime Ministers especially Mrs. Indira Gandhi, he will have peoples respect otherwise he will go with the wind. Maybe he does not respect ex Prime Minister Indira Gandhi since she was a lady.

  • Teen Chickoo - 9 years ago

India was Indira. Modi is no where near her.No other later congress leader showed the political acumen or genuineness. As a matter of fact, all of them are spineless. Forget about Rahul. Today India is in Modi euphoria. Time will let that die too. The Prime Minister would have had earned more respect, if he had attended the function commemorating the martyrdom of Indira Gandhi.

  • Karthik Srinivasan - 9 years ago

Mrs. Gandhi was a great leader and was responsible for her actions and owned the consequenses. Mr.Modi seems to a PM of the same cadre who walks his talk. The congress during their reign after Mrs. Gandhi's demise, failed to be stubborn in decision making and also spineless in acting against irregularities within its UPA members. On her anniversary congress should try to introspect and try not to blame Mr.Modi for not being present.

I think Indira Gandhi was one who really lead India with good intention and good faith and lead India to its real potential; it is the later Congress leaders did not do as good as Indira Gandhi.

Overall Nehru had flows in his leadership but it is his followers did not do as expected for the Country leading to the issues we have currently.

In my opinion Indira Gandhi deserves credit for her handling of 1971 war and also steering India through difficult times.

  • Sudhir Vashisth - 9 years ago

He never said Indira was bad or something. It's just that the memorial timing clashed with another which was more important because of reasons emotional, ideal, political or otherwise. When did you last see Shashtri Ji's memorial being attended by Congress leader's on his B'day Anniversary as it clashes with Ghandhi's.

Victim of overshadowing.. I guess... Now atleast for next five years, it's Indira's turn...

  • MANISH KUMAR - 9 years ago

He should not be like congress people who only worship Nehru. There is no doubt that Indira was also a Great leader in her second stint so he should hv shown boundary less nature n hv done his duty... n I m quite sure that by doing this he would hv earned more respect.
