You dog lovers need to give your heads a shake. Dogs are just that... dogs! If you need one in your life don't subject everyone else to them while your out in public.

Dogs DO NOT belong in stores unless they are a service animals.

I'm on the fence with this; while the best place for dogs really is at home, we so often see thoughtless acts of neglect whereby owners will leave dogs in hot cars in the summer while they shop for hours, and will do the same in the winter months. I just witnessed such an act of neglect today at Signal Hill where someone left their little 4 pound dog tied up outside in the frigid wind for over 1.5 hours while they shopped for groceries! The little guy was shaking with cold and holding up his feet. What is the point in bringing them with you when they are not allowed in stores? The owner would not respond to pages within the store, and the store manager finally had to contact animal services for help. Bottomline: keep your animals safely at home while you run errands!

We take our dog (a small, quiet and very well-behaved Shih Tzu) everywhere and have never once had a problem. She has been welcomed in almost every store or business into which we have taken her; the exceptions have explained that she could not come in because they serve food. She is kept on a fairly short leash and knows to simply lie down and wait while we conduct our business or stay very close to us while we shop. She has been welcomed in Prada, Tiffany's, Saks Fifth Avenue and other extremely high-end stores in New York City and Philadelphia, in dozens of stores in Las Vegas and San Francisco, as well as in several stores in Calgary and numerous in Okotoks.

Those businesses that have "store dogs" can sometimes present a small problem, but if she seems to be anxious, we simply take her back to the car. Most "store dogs" are very used to other dogs coming and and after a couple of minutes of curious sniffing, they generally go back to their resting area and all is well.

San Francisco now welcomes dogs on restaurant and bar patios and it's a beautiful thing to experience.
