I remember ToEE being widely panned at release. I played it, since I was a glutton for punishment, especially when it came to D&D rpgs. I just remember the combat being really slow, and the performance being 'meh'. I don't think I made it too far in.
I think I actually played through and finished Betrayal at Krondor, and IIRC this game made me go read the books too.
