Should texting while walking be a ticketable offence?

This is silly. Not everything needs to be a ticketable offence. If you are dumb enough to walk into upcoming traffic because you can't take your eyes away from your phone, than natural consequences and selection can deal with you. There are sooo many more important issues that could use our time, police force, and our money. We don't need to be wasting tax dollars on something that should be common sense. If you need to raise awareness about the dangers of walking into oncoming traffic (seriously?) then try challenging high school students to create a powerful PSA, and air the winners on TV. If you want to spend money, at least do it, doing something proactive.

Relax, SED. It's not actually "the law", yet ... Just a topic put to a vote to the general public. Personally, it's a ridiculous idea, in my opinion. Not everything people CHOOSE to do (whether one deems it a stupid idea or not), should be a ticketable offence. We're already inundated with silly rules that go too far. Of course, safety is priority but law enforcement has "bigger fish to fry" than catching texting walkers in the act! Seriously. What's next ... Tickets for anyone who chews gum AND picks their nose while walking?! There are far too many distracted DRIVERS in this city and the focus should be on ticketing THEM before someone gets killed. I'd rather see people who text and drive penalized more severely instead of having our police waste time, energy and tax payer dollars on going after people who text and WALK. Get real.

I could care less about advancing technologies, what I care about is people not paying attention to where they are going and what they are doing. I can assume, Megan, from your comment then that you are one of the people I see all the time driving and texting or talking then? Why do people always think that they should be 'immune' from the law? Laws are in place to keep everyone safe, not to disrupt your busy social calendar. If it's that important, stop for 5 minutes and do what you have to do. I suppose that you think there is no danger when you are walking down the street talking or texting - until you almost get hit by a car, or run into a lady with a baby and a stroller - but then, I guess thats not your fault either 'cause you were on your phone.

Distracted walking is not ticketable but if you die because you have your nose in your phone and are not aware of your surroundings that is called genetic cleansing! Too stupid to live. Not police able!

What freedom do you want to take next? This is ridiculous. I 100% agree with Megan's comments. People need to watch where they walk, but ticketing them while they walk and text is laughable.

This is outrageous, does this man not understand that we live in a world of advancing technologies. Many people need to conduct business while walking, connect with clients, search directions etc. Making this s ticket able offense will never fly in such a busy city where people rely on their phones.
