They wound not retire richard pettys 43 he has over 200 wins and 7 championships

  • mike B - 9 years ago

Yes, or at least let Jeff be the only one to drive it. As for the idiots think ing about the 43 and 3, both those numbers are out there again cause Petty and earhart wanted the numbers to keep racing on track. I don't even see Jeff retiring, he's just not ful time but when he is racing it will be in the 24.

If Dale Sr. No. 3 is still racing then what so special about the 24?

  • ron pryor sr - 9 years ago

why because he was the biggest crybaby the sport has ever seen?

I checked yes but after reading the comments agree that there are other numbers that should probably be retired first, Petty's 43 and Dales 3. it is my understanding that the teams own the numbers and that it is up to the team owner whether or not to use the number. I would think that the King himself could make the decision regarding his number and Childress for the 3. Rick Hendrick may decide to not use the 24. I do agree that seeing the 43 and 3 on the track does bring back memories of their greatness. As far as total wins go, Petty had far superior equipment during his time, i.e. the Superbird, to his opponents and won a lot of races because of that. How competitive would he be today, just look at how many races Petty enterprises has won recently. It is far more difficult to win races in this era.

First, Gordon was a good driver, not great like others before him. He would be a long way off before "his" number is retired. Second, there are only so many numbers to use, you cant start retiring numbers. If you did, you would eventually run out.......

  • GregoTX - 9 years ago

Absolutely not. If the 43 and the 3 are still on the track, the 24 should be as well. It would be like San Francisco retiring the 81 of Terrell Owens, but not retiring the 80 of Jerry Rice.

I voted no but not for the same reason as most of you. First, the reason I voted no is because I think it will be great seeing other drivers in the future driving the #24. I know when I see the 43 I think of my youth and seeing Mr. Petty...when we see the 3 we will think of Dale...when we see the 24 the kids today some year will think of Jeff Gordon and tell your great grand kids how great he was.

I cant believe you guys would cut on Gordon and talk this smack about how Petty and Dale were better than him. First off them guys raced when there were no rules. They also raced 5 nights a week, as far as Petty is concerned. Can you imagine if Gordon could have raced 5 times a week? Think about who would have been the King then! Petty and Dale were great ....but lets be realistic here. #24 and the #48 will be 2 numbers that none of you can dispute were among the greatest ever.

And since we are talking realistic. Think about what these guys make today. They can thank JG for that....and the huge contract Team Kool offered him to go open wheel racing. He then showed Nascar drivers how to market themselves. I don't expect everyone to like JG as well as I do......but you could just answer the question, give a comment why and leave the BS out. Show the guy some respect because had he not came along, who knows where Nascar would be......

They have not retired the #43 (Richard Petty) who has 200 wins. NASCAR has not retired the #3 (Dale Earnhardt).
No. The #24 (Gordon) should not be retired. "IF" NASCAR ever does start considering retiring numbers, the #24 needs to get in line behind the others.

Although, in the old days, the numbers were needed so "scorers" could see who went across the start finish line every lap and at what times. Now, it's all computerized and the numbers are merely for so the spectators in the stands can see the cars better. That's the only reason now.

I second what Mr. Quinn wrote, and let me point out they haven't retired David Pearsons' #21 either.

  • NascarBill - 9 years ago

If the #3 is not retired, the #24 shouldn't either. Dale was much more important to the sport than Jeff may be.

Jeff is a very smart guy and he knows what is best for him...I would like to see him as a commentator because he has a very good sense of humor and could make it interesting. I will miss him...he has been one of my favorite guys.

Retire the #24, I am very proud to ware the #. A lot of good changes with Nascar, let's keep-up and look to change with favor.

Jeff Gordon was, is and always will be Nascar. When Jeff steps out of the car Nov 2015 Nascar becomes history !!! Petty 92 , Dale 01 Jeff 15 the only real Nascar drivers to draw a breath , everyone else just dreams of being that great and chased these three for over 50 years almost 400 wins combined countless top 5s & top 10 s !!!! NASCAR DON'T REALIZE IT BUT THEY ARE RETIRING...also in all honesty 90% true fans followed Richard, Dale or Jeff they were and will always be the one's to beat, a benchmark that cannot be reached

A few drivers come a long and deserve that recognition. It should be done for Jeff. His stats speak for them self.

  • Jim Robertson - 9 years ago

Jeff is the biggest icon. or legend, or what have you that NASCAR has ever seen. He is the one that made this number what it is today ... a status symbol ... the number defining the modern era NASCAR. YES I do believe that Jeff Gordon"s #24 should remain Jeff Gordon's #24.

  • jean spruill - 9 years ago

I agree with others if Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt's are not retired Jeff Gordon sure doesn't deserve to have his number retired, so he won many races and championships but those guys help make NASCAR

  • tepenne - 9 years ago

If they retire Jeff's number that would set a precedent that could start legitimate arguments to retire a lot more numbers right away. They will soon have to start considering 3-digit numbers in that case.

  • Brad Quinn - 9 years ago

    They haven't retired Richard Petty's 43, or Dale Earnhardt's 3. Enough said!
