This cat curfew idea is really getting my blood boiling. It is appalling to me that people expect to keep these domestic cats imprisoned without first thinking about the destructive impact their own existence is having on the environment and its fauna. It is the feral cats that kill select native wildlife and only because they are hungry, this feral population has come about because irresponsible pet owners (that's humans) haven't desexed their animal. House cats are generally terrible hunters and if there is that much concern, a simple collar with a bell will do the trick. As for all of those blood-thirsty cat-haters out there, I say you start hating yourselves because you are the problem, not this, or any other species!! We have paved natural habitats over with concrete, we continue to destroy habitats for resources (more like profit), we kill even our own for money, power and entertainment. On top of all of this, we continue to breed like catholic rabbits, without once thinking of the environmental impact of such recklessness. When I see anger over the cessation (really just a delay) of a mining project with no regard for the population of endangered skinks it is about to wipe out (apparently these native lives don't matter), I am reminded that we have no right to take away the freedoms of a domesticated animal because its now feral (homeless due to us) cousin needed to sustain itself.

I dislike cats but each to their own however when the neighbours cat continually fouls in our garden and leaves parts of animals kills around I have changed my mind. There should be a curfew on all cats. Dogs are not allow to roam the neighbourhood so why shouldcatsbe allowed?

Not only cats kill wildlife. Dogs do as well. So do the feral foxes that inhabit Manningham. It seems we also have feral humans who kill for pleasure.
In 17 years in Warrandyte, our cats have killed the grand total of ONE minah bird and six mice. Mostly, they are too well fed to be bothered chasing anything, and too old and fat to catch anything anyway.
Why not spend the money that would have been put to 'enforcing' a cat curfew into reducing the feral animal population and educating people into responsible pet ownership?

No other pet is allowed to roam onto neighbouring properties so why would one that is often involved in killing wildlife be allowed to? Cats do not need to roam, most breeders and owners of cats have healthy happy indoor cats, some may have cat areas outside if they feel they need sunshine. I keep my chooks, goat, horse and dogs restricted to my property, please cat owners do the same.
