Religion elevates us above the basic qualities of animals but the dark side is beating your brand of religion into others so they understand how important it is to you. It should never be "forced" or it is not a "belief" but a necessity to remain alive. In the 30's, you were afraid of not being a Nazi, so you raised your arm in blind obedience -- that is not religion. Religion is having a faith that you have some control over the randomness of your life because God is on your side. We all have to die, some hope there is a second act.

Why did Americans flock to all churches after 09/11/2001?

Religion highlights our faults and differences. That isn't a good way to feel or understand things. If we want to feel oneness and kinship, we need spirituality, not religion.
