Should recreational marijuana use be legal in Michigan?

No one should promote the canard that marijuana is socially undesirable, or dangerous--inherently toxic--like pharmaceutical drugs. Or even that it is a ‘drug’, except in Merriam-Webster’s third and broadest definition, as something which affects the mind. By that definition, religion and television (‘the plug-in drug’) should also be included. In truth marijuana is a medicinal herb, cultivated, bred, and evolved in service to human beings over thousands of years.

“The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that had two enemies: the anti-war left and black people. We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting people to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, break up their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.” --John Ehrlichman

Prohibition of marijuana is a premise built on a tissue of lies: Concern For Public Safety. Our new laws save hundreds of lives every year, on our highways alone. In November of 2011, a study at the University of Colorado found that in the thirteen states that decriminalized marijuana between 1990 and 2009, traffic fatalities dropped by nearly nine percent—now nearly ten percent in Michigan—more than the national average, while sales of beer went flat by five percent. No wonder Big Alcohol opposes it. Ambitious, unprincipled, profit-driven undertakers might be tempted too.

In 2012 a study released by 4AutoinsuranceQuote revealed that marijuana users are safer drivers than non-marijuana users, as "the only significant effect that marijuana has on operating a motor vehicle is slower driving", which "is arguably a positive thing".

No one has ever died from an overdose of marijuana. It's the most benign 'substance' in history. Most people—and particularly patients who medicate with marijuana--use it in place of prescription drugs or alcohol.

Marijuana has many benefits, most of which are under-reported or never mentioned in American newspapers. Research at the University of Saskatchewan indicates that, unlike alcohol, cocaine, heroin, or Nancy (“Just say, ‘No!’”) Reagan’s beloved nicotine, marijuana is a neuroprotectant that actually encourages brain-cell growth. Researchers in Spain (the Guzman study) and other countries have discovered that it also has tumor-shrinking, anti-carcinogenic properties. These were confirmed by the 30-year Tashkin population study at UCLA.

Drugs are man-made, cooked up in labs, for the sake of patents and the profits gained by them. Often useful, but typically burdened with cautionary notes and lists of side effects as long as one's arm. 'The works of Man are flawed.'

Marijuana is a medicinal herb, the most benign and versatile in history. In 1936 Sula Benet, a Polish anthropologist, traced the history of the word “marijuana”. It was “cannabis” in Latin, and “kanah bosm” in the old Hebrew scrolls, quite literally the Biblical Tree of Life, used by early Christians to treat everything from skin diseases to deep pain and despair. Why despair? Consider the current medical term for cannabis sativa: a “mood elevator”. . . as opposed to antidepressants, which ‘flatten out’ emotions, leaving patients numb to both depression and joy.

The very name, “Christ” translates as “the anointed one”. Well then, anointed with what? It’s a fair question. And it wasn’t holy water, friends. Holy water came into wide use in the Middle Ages. In Biblical times, it was used by a few tribes of Greek pagans. And Christ was neither Greek nor pagan.

Medicinal oil, for the Prince of Peace. A formula from the Biblical era has been rediscovered. It specifies a strong dose of oil from kanah bosom, ‘the fragrant cane’ of a dozen uses: ink, paper, rope, nutrition. . . . It was

Legalizing cannabis will calm people down and then all the alcoholics will lay down their bottles and be calm. Fact another fact is cannabis is not just used to heal the mind but there are many other benefits to ones health. Communication and records should be made by all of us. To mention one benefit is how muscles relax from any method of consumption used. No farms needed! MMCup 6/11/16 in Clio Michigan. I am there, as it is the 1st gathering in Michigan going couldn't hurt.

Nothing that anybody opposing cannabis has to say actually makes sense. "It's a drug and leads to harder drugs"
All these end of times theories when it's proven in Colorado that
    Drunk driving is down
    Crime overall is down
    Drug overdoses are down
    Fatalities overall are down meanwhile,
Tax revenue is near half a billion.
Dumbest thing I've heard was "legalize this? What's next cocaine?" When the issue here is clearly marijuana. After 2012 with colorados legalization, according to high times, people actually started realizing the failed 70 year drug war and the benefit of cannabis use on the user and economy. Police spend way too much time tracking down marijuana for no reason it detracts from them stopping real crime!

This proposal desperately needs mass attention. Looking back over a year ago to west side of the united states to include Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. Using Colorado as an example, a 24% tax is in effect for all recreational sales of marijuana. Of 1 million gross that's $240,000 going into the pockets of the state for use in transportation, education, law enforcement and many others. With Michigan proposing a 10% tax that's substantially lower than Colorado, but that's just a proposition and still 100,000 per million going into the states pocket, which Michigan desperately needs. With an estimated 200 million in sales that's a 20 million dollar increase in tax revenue. Flint is in its worst shape in history along with many other cities around Michigan. Marijuana has been around for centuries and isn't going away...ever. We as a society are in a time where we need to take a good look at how to control and embrace a booming industry.

Hello. Timothy Locke, Founder and Treasurer of Abrogate Prohibition Michigan. I would very much enjoy to do a personal interview with you.
I can be reached at the BQC email here dm2016bmlcmc@gmail.com
Or you can find me on my personal website noted above, http://www.michican.us.
The proposed amendment to the state Constitution would do far more than what was listed. I would love to speak with you about the full and vastly more beneficial effect that fully repealing prohibition on cannabis would have on the economy of the entire state.
Let us be honest, baby steps, especially those less than previous steps, lead only to a niche market regarding the least beneficial aspects of everything that is the cannabis plant. And does nothing more than Prohibition 2.51, at the behest of Government Taxation and continued harsh penalties for the use of a non-toxic, non-harmful, non-habit forming plant.
The only sane thing to do is fully end the insanity just as Jack Cole, Co-Founder of L.E.A.P. has said since the Beginning of the organization.
Just as Jack Herer has said since the early 70s.
Just as Rick Simpson says today.
We can pick the can up and go home…
Or we can put this heavy burden upon the back of our own children, as it was so lovingly placed upon ours just 40 yrs ago….

The third (latest) approved proposal allowing unconditional legalization of marijuana use and possession/growth is exactly what is needed to put freedom back into the marijuana issue. It (until the 30s) was always a freely-growing plant -- like carnations.

Alcohol prohibition was a disaster, and the (misnamed) war on drugs has been no less a failure.

    Kris & Anyone reading this:
I've spent time around a family member who uses cannabis for medicinal purposes. Actually, it's always great to be around him. He's an intelligent, athletic, and hard working American whose medical conditions are only aided by the properties found in marijuana. Marijuana was given to the world by God, a natural, SAFE plant remedy for multiple medical uses such as:
    Multiple Sclerosis
    Depression
    Alzheimer's
    Anxiety Disorders
    Eating disorders
    Muscular pain
    Bipolar Disorder
    And many more..
Do I think marijuana will be legalized? No.
Is it easy for the government to admit they made a huge mistake? No.
Marijuana doesn't make you lazy, unmotivated or "freak out."
It's a way safer alternative to alcohol, and many prescription drugs.
Point is, we should all have a choice.
C'Mon people let's do some research..
How many people have died because of Marijuana use? STRICTLY MARIJUANA USE?
    0.
You cannot overdose on it. It is virtually impossible. Well, you can if you consume over 1,000 joints over a course of 10 minutes.
I challenge anyone to do that!;)

I do not personally smoke marijuana but it is time for this failed policy to end. It is an individual's choice, not the governments. The tax revenue is much needed on Michigan's infrastructure. let's legalize and tax instead of spending money on a failed fight.....

  • Kris - 9 years ago

Anyone who wants to legalize marijuana for recreational use hasn't spend any time around an individual or family member who engages in the use of marijuana for recreational use! There is nothing productive about the use of marijuana! It only results in destructive behavior and destructive personality changes!
