George Orwell Alert: What is the worst word in politics right now?
A. "Folks." Never has a single word more insidiously crept into the bloodstream, turning entire populations of sophsitocated people into lobotomized hillbillies. If I hear one more politician say "folks," I'm diving through a window.
B. "Irregardless." It's my personal benchmark to measure dumbness in public speech, irrespective of the speaker who employs the term and regardless of the speaker's station.
C. "Really?" Maybe it was funny or at least useful at first, but this cliche has already become tedious and predictable.
D. "On the same page." The irony is that one's use of this term usually belies the virtual illiteracy of the speaker.
E. "A breath of fresh air." How many times have you heard a politician say, "He's a breath of fresh air," instantly unconsciously leaving a stale impression by virtue of word selection.
F. "Mistakes were made." Christie actually said that in his Bridgegate State of the State speech, grabbing hold of the passive voice to smother ownership of the offense in question.
G. "He is laying there on the road." Fifteen years ago, a person would get thrown out of a cocktail party for this rank grammatical error. Today, if one says, "He is lying on the pavement," he/she receives quizzical looks.
