When I took AP English (waaaay back in 1988), our teacher said there should be one class (and ONLY one class) for AP English, regardless of the size of the school. And that's the way it was in our school -- that class represented the best 25 students that the school had.

Too many kids who need remedial work are making it impossible for teachers to teach the goals they have planned for advanced students. Students in honors and AP classes should not need weeks of teaching to the state competency exam, they shouldn't have any trouble with that level.
