some people will take anything that isn't nailed down. Why take a subpar hotel item when you can just buy a better one?
we pay so expensive for hotel room stay, i am sure a towel is ok to be taken away as souvenir.
I bought a used sony tv 14" from a hotel firesale before. (hotel chap lap)
A friend ( an expatriate ) of my niece always take the towels home after swimming at the renaissance hotel.A closet full !
Taking anything besides the complimentary items is stealing.
you eat at a restaurant, you pay for the food & service. doesnt mean get to take utensils and plates (or the chef) home!
i have never took anything before, :) for me its an act of stealing.

What we paid at the counter is for the room rate only and is not inclusive of all the facilities in the room. Taking them away is a form of greediness or so to say stealing (taking away without permission).

I've heard of people carting away items from hotel rooms i.e. mini fridge, carpets etc. Culprits can be both locals and international guests. More rampant among international guests (quoting a colleague who works in the tourism industry). I think the act itself shows how uncivilized the doer is. I strongly believe items in a hotel room should be left in the room, for you to use them, and for other guests after you.

Never be termed as ''stealing''; just request, purchase or ...... leave it! Respect items as you do not like to see your own items missing too! However, I like keeping ''sewing kits'' from hotels I stayed ... ^_^
Most of the items can be purchased from shops except items like Towel will be a gift if the hotel name is written on it and worth taking away or buying from hotel.
sometime some hotel discourage guest from taking away items from hotel by writing the word I STOLE from the Hotel where I stayed which discourage guest to take away any items.
