What do you think the Stampede should do about the chuckwagon races?

I love animals as much as the next person. However these animals are bread to race. If you leave a race horse stuck at some farm not being able to run it is going to deteriorate and then eventually die, they become depressed and limp. There muscles become so tight from not being exercised that it can kill them. Also if anyone enjoys the option of public transit or low taxes leave stampede alone. That's where Calgary makes all it's money for improvements on our city. Also alot of the horses are cared for very Well the trainers or drivers love there horses like family.

Audrey - Humans dying because of drunk driving etc, is very sad, but they know the risks and consent to driving. Horses do not have that right when they are chosen to race. These are two VERY different things.

I keep hearing over and over and over that chuck drivers love their horses like family. You do not force family to participate in a sport that has a high likelihood of death, injury, stress, and fear. At least I don't.

I have been around wagons for 40 years. The accidents that do happen are very sad but what about drivers hitting other drivers on the road because of booze or drugs or just not watching. These wagon drivers love there horses like their children and it hurts them when one has to be put down. That is one of their family members.

As a vegan myself, I welcome all the help to stop any non-sense to keep putting animals, all animals in harm way. We, as a society, still have lots to learn and accept. There is a sense of hypocrisy in standing up for horses, and letting cows, pigs, chicken, etc, being abused, but, that's not the core of this discussion here, but a good item to point out. The fallacy that if it wasn't for the stampede or the sport they would not exist is absurd. If they did not exist, they will not be suffering unnecessarily for our amusement. Please think about it, honestly and you will understand how barbaric this "sport" is. I fair sport will be for people that consent to pull the chuckwagon to do so, that way if they were to die, we will know for sure that nobody coerced them and that they were well aware of the risks. I sounds stupid, but why not put ourselves in the "shoes" of the horses.

Listen. For the people saying that in order to be against animal abuse you have to be vegan. I think that's wrong. The vegan movement is just not big enough. And in my opinion it is a whole different discussion. I agree that veganism should be the moral baseline but to say that people that arent vegan shouldn't be helping in other animal causes well just just wrong. And it doesn't help the animals like ones in the stampede.

I don't see why you have to be vegan for being against animals used for entertainment or sports with obvious danger where they can get hurt.
It has nothing to do with the inhumane conditions of animals for consumption. Very, very awful, but it's a different discussion. And it doesn't make the animal races look better. (Besides..ever heard of biological products??)
This entertainment/sport is obviously dangerous for these animals. And as most evolved species on the planet we could act like it. It's 2015...take some responsibility!

These horses are not abused at all they are bread to race and after there careers done in. Horse racing these drivers. Buy them so they can keep doing what they love to do, if they didn't they have been sent to the slaughter house.

Obviously this stampede has been proven to be cruel and in humane in the past year with the illness and deaths. The driver who let his house be killed admitted on the news himself that 7 of his horses got sick at the stampede last year. Did anyone catch that comment? I am sorry that the rodeo is proving all on it's own to be cruel and soon it will be gone for all you Rednecks. It is about time for Albertans to evolve out of the primitive ages. My god, your standing up for animal abuse and kitten stranger's in Calgary this week! I am embarrassed to live in a province full of such cavemen. These Chuckwagon drivers are known for rescuing these horses from being sent to the meat factory after retiring from racing, and the horses love to run, and these guys spare no expense in caring for them so it confuses me why they would Chuckwagon race them. There has to be something a,lot safer then this Calgary Stampede. There is a problem there when it's noted world wide in news stories. Again its time to grown and evolve people, we have learned how to be civilized.

Unless these animal activist are "vegan" they have no right to protest the Stampede. Far more animals live in horrible conditions and are killed for food every day.

Cancer chuck totally so we dont have to hear about horses deaths at every stampede...If you want chucks harness up the people who are in fav or of chuck and let em puil wagons.instaed of horses..that way they would realize how dangerous it is...im sure they would all quit immediately...dahhhhhhh
