What UK Soap Should I Watch

I've been watching Corrie for a year and a half. I've never watched Eastenders so I can't comment on that, but my friends in England really like it. I appreciate that the British soaps are much less melodramatic than American soaps, the storylines are usually interesting, the characters are ordinary everyday people, and I also enjoy the bit of humor that Corrie puts in the show. I've become such a fan I bought two books on the history of Coronation street, plus a Corrie t-shirt and winter scarf! Like Debra I've also watched old episodes on YouTube. And if I can get back to England before the end of this year I would love to go on the Coronation Street set tour (it closes on Dec. 31).

Both Eastenders and Corrie are very popular. Eastenders has a reputation for being a bit grim and miserable (which it is!). Both can be addictive viewing but my vote goes to Corrie because it has more humour and some really excellently drawn characters. Corrie always wins 'quote of the week' - some of which are hilarious. Both soaps have their quota of fine actors, some of whom have been in the soap for years, if not decades. British soaps don't have the glamour (or budget) that the American soaps have. Ours seem a lot grittier and down to earth. However, both types have their place and it doesn't seem to distract from their popularity.

I am a huge Corrie fan. A friend of mine from Burnley started me on it a few yrs ago so I had to go learn about all the classic characters and all. It's really funny and somewhat dramatic at times.

It is fun to go on YouTube and watch old episodes of Eastenders and Coronation Street. The first ever episode of Eastenders is a classic!
