I have an Epson XP-310 and dislike it. I am major annoyed when it will not print in black and white (which is what I always chose) when another color dries up. Now I wish I had my old Canon Printer back. It always worked even if the color ink cartridges were empty. :(
My printer wasn't getting much use at home so I keep it at work because we needed a color printer for occasional printouts we give to clients. If I need to print something I don't feel like I'm misusing office supplies since I've supplied a $250 printer.
Yes, we have 2 printers. My husband uses his for his art business.
I use mine for articles that I look up but am printing probably 80% less than even a year ago.
Am sure we could get by with only one but it is convenient to have each in our separate work areas.

Low quality things though... so I can get away with really cheap paper, and ~$1ea cartridges that I can stretch out to about 3000-5000 pages each. It's cheap, fast, and easy. Of course I recycle, but... that only reduces ecological footprint of destruction I wreak.
I don't care though, self seeding perennial grasses (like switchgrass), as well as hemp and others are fully capable of replacing trees for paper. Politics is all that stands in the way. If 'the environment' were really a variable, we'd've switched over long ago..
I mainly use a Brother laser printer for black and white printouts. I usually refill the toner cartridges myself for around $5.
I got tired of paying for expensive ink for my color inkjet printer. I first bought generic cartridges. They were cheaper and printed fine, but I still had to replace them frequently. I found a $60 continuous ink system for the Epson printer I already own. The ink tanks sit outside of my printer, but I don't mind for the amount of money it saves me.
I use my printer to print knitting patterns off the internet. I also make copies of patterns from my books and magazines because I can carry around the paper patterns in my project bags,and easily make the necessary marks and notes and calculations on the paper patterns without ruining the originals. My son makes collage cartoons and makes copies to distribute to his friends at their get-togethers. Sometimes my husband prefers to print out some his working papers because he finds it easier to sort, edit, and compare pages when he can lay them out in front of him . Not everyone enjoys relying solely on electronic technology, especially when it glitches at the worst possible time, which why we also prefer printing out our boarding passes. All this amounts to maybe a dozen pages a week and, yes, annoyingly ,our Canon Pixma costs us a couple of $100 a year in ink cartridges. I welcome the Epsom system you describe
My laser printer at work is a necessity for mailing labels and other needs for my business. On my home one, I use the scanner a lot more than the printer. But I deliberately chose my cheap ink jet by looking at what types of non-OEM cartridges were cheapest. For a couple bucks each, it doesn't matter too much if they dry up between uses.
I have 2 Epson printers, both wide-format. They're priceless when it comes to printing out drawings for use in the workshop, but also come in very handy when addressing envelopes (my handwriting is atrocious). Want a hard copy of a book to take along on a camping trip? The printer is good for than, too. Of course, I grew up running a print shop, so the ink is in my blood 55 years later.
When I need to print something I go to the public library and pay $.15 per page. I don't print much, and I think that having a printer on site is just temptation to print a bunch of material I will never look at again. If I want to save something, I save it on a thumb drive. I know that the Cloud is out there for storage, but the thumb drive is my compromise between that and paper storage.
Printer scanners are still vital - writer of this article - duh - what are you thinking.
Thus far of many printers I have tried over the decades Epson is the best.
Do not believe everything you read that people post in the form of articles because these guys sit and ponder what subject to write about so they can make some bucks - not whether those articles actually make sense.
We just bought a printer and I love it and I love printing things out. I have for years.
Over the last 15 years I've done a lot of printing but I don't buy ink cartridges. I use the 'continuous' ink system, fits on my Epson printer and the cost per page is negligible. My turning point came when I though I was printing a few pages from the internet, pressed the print button then went off to do some chores, when I returned it was printing page 102. Best decision I ever made.
I've been refilling my cartridges for ten years. Do a search. You can buy ink for your brand of printer from more than a couple of companies. I've bought a little ink re setter thingie for my Canon cartridges. Some companies have a lock out when the ink goes low, so these re setters put it back to show full and you refill the cartridge and your back in business in no time for a fraction of the cost. I've heard that if you buy ink in a cartridge it amounts to about 630.00 a gallon.
This sounds revolutionary and great. Lots of people still do home printing, the only problem with it, having to replacecink catridges, seems to be solved here. Awesome!
Go to Best Buy or call 1-800-RECYCLING or go to www.1800recycling.com to find alternate locations to recycle the printer in your area.
We have 3 of the same printer: 1 that my husband and I had and rarely use; 1 that my college-age daughter has, never-used, in the box, 2 years old; and 1 that I am supposed to use for a non-profit to print checks for grant awards (but I hand write the checks). We use one of the printers maybe twice monthly, but it isn't necessary.
We actually have 2 (one was given to us), have had them both for over 5 years. Haven't bought ink in at least 3 years and we have used them about once per year. Keep them simply because I'd hate for it to sit in a landfill! Any suggestions?
I do have a printer but use it very seldom. Sometimes, however, paper copies are essential. I have a smartphone but (being of an older generation) I have a bit of trouble using it instead of paper.
I have a cheap black and white laser printer which is perfect for me. Prints when I need it and toner doesn't "dry up".
We have an Epson printer, but rarely use it. It's an XP-410 model... and it works pretty good. Since we just bought it within the past year, we haven't had to re-fill the cartridges or replace them yet, but I'll be "dammed" if I have to purchase another printer just to save a few bucks... forget that!!
I ise my Epson printer almost everyday! I print lots of recipes, guitar tabs, jokes for coworkers, etc. For me a printer is a no brainer! I also still shoot with film cameras and listen to music on LP!
I do business with Luddites who want old-fashioned invoices mailed to them, so I have to have a black and white printer. I also fool around with digital art and use a color printer to produce the results. I presently own FOUR printers, none of which are working properly. My Brother b/w laser printer produces but there are gray streaks along one side that tell me the drum will soon need replacing. The HP printer/scanner/copier I bought from an estate worked like a dream for about a month, long enough for me to need to buy new cartridges, now the paper feed isn't working so it tells me there's no paper in the tray. Another HP I bought over a year ago here in Mexico is still new, but I can't find the cartridges for it because HP has discontinued the model. Oh, and a top of the line Brother color laser printer I just got at a thrift store, also a discontinued model, needs a new...you guessed it! Drum! You don't need to tell me I'm an idiot, I'm aware of that. What's sad is all the printers sitting around, most still usable if someone could fix them, but they're considered disposable these days.
I have a printer, but use it mostly for scans and faxes which are necessary for my business. I've used inkjet printers for years, always getting frustrated with the short lifespan of the ink cartridges. So very annoying!
I have a printer, HP 1010 series, cheaply made but does what I need it to do. First one i had kept screwing up, contacted HP and they sent me another just like it free. Sent the old one back to them, hooked up the free printer and it worked perfectly. I buy ink every month because we print a lot, recipes, chapters of our writings, proof of insurance because the electronic version is only for expensive smart(stupid)phones. Cheaper to print our selves than have it printed elsewhere.
I so agree that cartridges are pain where one does not need it, Here in SA when buying a brand new printer, it does not come with cartridges, they have to be purchased separately at a hughes cost, sometimes 2 to 3 times more then the new printer's cost.

You wine too much. Selling cheap printers that need ink is brilliant. Having a way to print docs at all was heaven-sent. Perhaps we will evolve away from printers and now have different options. Good. But let's not throw ink at the beloved printer. It's "saved our bacon more than once."
The cheap Epson printer I purchased for $59.00 broke before the first set of ink cartridges ran out. I had to buy another one of the exact same model so I could use my stock of ink cartridges (and purchased a 2 yr extended replacement warranty for $4.00). I shutter every time I have to print a page (once every couple of months) wondering if the piece of junk will die in the middle of the print job. I hate printers almost as much as I used to hate the old telephone modems.
I have a printer/scanner combo but I hardly ever use it because it is ALWAYS out of ink!!!!!! And the prices of refilling is is redicilous!!! I only use it when needed and to print photos which takes one whole container of ink anyway!

I became so sick of inkjet cartridge problems that I have switched to black and white laser printers. This has worked well for me - we have a Brother and an HP. I print something weekly, so having a printer is a necessity.
Yes, I have a printer. No, I don't print that often. But to say this is a stupid idea? I do not agree. There are times for printing, especially when vendors/websites are not up to date and do not offer electronic versions of their content. I sometimes print tickets, materials to read on a plane, information I need to hang on the front door for a delivery man, sometimes even do-it-yourself invitations. I know, the latter seems archaic, but I cannot tell you how many Evites get overlooked or go do spam... I like the fact that I don't have to buy a cadre of plastic cartridges when on one or two cartridges are empty. Not to mention the amount of plastic going to a landfill. Buying a more economical bottle when that one color runs out is exactly what I'd prefer. Thanks much!
Hate having to buy ink, have bought a new printer, yet it comes with just what I feel is a couple drops of ink!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! what are you to do??????
