Thankfully my children do not have food allergies. However one of my best friend's has 2 kids with severe nut allergies. As a "non-allergy" parent I don't readily read food labels. Yet I need to increase my food allergy awareness, especially when it comes to preparing foods for when we get together, so I don't accidentally forget or prepare something that is not safe for them to eat. Ironically I am very conscious of this as it relates to any school function food prep. It's the commonality of the basic food prep get together outside of school in which my awareness tends to not be where it should be.
I don't have an identified food allergy, but I react very badly to gluten and lactose (not all dairy though). I have a niece allergic to dairy and a series of medications, and my youngest daughter was breastfed until she was 18 months old because she reacted very badly (not anaphylatic ) to formula , even the hypoallergenic kind . I want to learn as much as I can about food allergies.
