Was Chase Utley's takeout slide a dirty play?

Yes Chase Utley slide was late and he did what you had to do to break up the DP! However why is Tejada not taking some flake for his "DWTS" play? Or is his broken leg his free pass? It sucks that he suffered an injury and his team may suffer for the lack of not having there starting 2nd baseman. Chase happens to be one of my favorite players and I enjoy his hard-nose play but his own team did him a dis-service by not playing him in NY! What up Dodgers can't support the issue? If NY wanted to retaliate knowing what's at stake so be it, but by not playing Utley you "Dodgers" have allowed this to carry into next season!

He was just playing real baseball like we learned in little league. Break-up the double play. Nothing new they've been doing it for over a hundred years.
If you're a receiver in the NFL and you run a route across the middle you're going to get hit.
A MLB shortstop knows to get out of the way in a double play instead of atempting a spin move.

    Nasty dirty play
Wow I have no words for Utley
Except I hope he gets a little taste of his own medicine
He will be remembered for this and yes I agree with md nat Going out and endangering the livelihood of fellow players. Totally uncalled for
Wish I was there at Citi field tomorrow
    I'd root for the Mets

Dirty player, horrible attempt at a slide
I love watching this game always have
Torre needs to suspend this classless act...
He didn't even touch the base...
Two things come to mind when I see both Chase Utley and Chris Coghlan play... Dirty classless men hurting the livelihood of the other players and these men have no regards to rules and regulations
I'm a Cardinals fan but looking forward to mets destroying the Dodgers due to this nasty play

If this nasty tackle keeps up- thanks to confounded umpires- the DL will be a mile long and the game ruined

No attempt to reach for the base. Utley's only purpose was to stop Tejada from making the throw to first. By rule, he's out and so is the batter. Blown call by the umpires. The fact that someone got hurt is sad but irrelevant when applying the rule. Either the umpires didn't know the rule or they chose not to enforce it. That egregious screw up probably cost New York the game. Utley's poor decision cost Tejada the rest of his season and should be suspended. With instant replay there's no excuse for getting it wrong.

They call call it the Chase Rule. It's called the common sense rule in not purposely sliding into a player to cause bodily harm. Utley is off the base line.

Come on people, it stinks that Tejada was injured but honestly any other player would have done that. Tejada made a dumb spin move it was his own damn fault.

I was wearing my Chase Utley Phillies shirt last night while watching this game. I like the passion that Chase brings to the game but as long as he doesnt cross the line. However, That was one of the dirtiest disgraceful slides I have ever seen in MLB. No one teaches a player to do that. NO ONE.

I coached college baseball and have been around professional players, coaches and scouts my entire adult life. That was a violent roll block at the player. Premeditated Intent or not, the execution was botched by Utley and it is 100% the responsibility of Chase to control how he conducts his break-up slide.. He did not do that. The rules clearly provide for the protection of the fielder.
Utley interfered on the play and made no attempt to grab the bag. Both outs should be recorded and Utley should be suspended by Torre if Joe has a clue.
Suspend Utley and don't let the Dodgers replace him on the roster.

Also I would like to add to this is this pass summer Mets player Daniel murphy did this same play against the dodgers and no one complain about it before actually the Daniel murphy play was even more off of the bag by 2 or 3 feet so everyone one upset at Utley slide seems to forget the Mets have always done these plays just as much as every MLB team out there

I am deeply saddened by Chase utleys gutless play. I am sad for baseball. I am a hockey fan and have been my whole life! I am NOT a mets fan or a dodgers fan at all! I am from Chicago and has watched the cubs game earlier after a century of losing, I thought I'd take in a cubs game. Hardly ever watch baseball. But was thoroughly disgusted by what I saw today!! The poor poor Mets were absolutely and devastating ROBBED of this game and of their short stop. So so clear to see that bum was not aiming to slide into 2nd at all! So so clear that he only intended to take out poor defenseless Tejada. I was enraged by that play, how unsportsmanlike it was. I was off my seat and couldn't sit down. HOW COULD SUCH A PLAY BE ALLOWED. Even worse, they allowed it to count a run. Then they awarded that bum...to go back on the base! What!! What!! R u serious! I immediately registered that these umpires or fools are brain dead! Especially after reading the baseball rules, absolutely should have been a double play. I don't really care who wins, im not from either city, I just can't stand to see something do blatantly wrong be carried out. The Mets played a great game and probably should have won; if it weren't for broadstreet bullies like Chase Utley and gutless rule-bookless umpires that ought to be ashamed of themselves. This is honestly my 2nd baseball game I have watched in over a decade and boy what a disappointment. I can't get that ruthless play out of my head nor how the umpires

Tho I agree it was a dirty play and a intended play it is still a play any pro player would make to break up the double and that is just fact. You can look up any team and for certain you will see atleast one video of a player of that team making a similar play. once again I completely agree it is dirty and what not but it is a play every team coach in the mlb tells the players to make.

Awful awful late slide. Illegal. Should have been called double play. Clearly Utley only had intention of gunning for Tejada, didn't aim for bag at all. Can't take the Philly out of the boy. Hope someone is as considerate of his fibia as he was of Reuben's. Also, Joe Torre liked like the village idiot trying to answer questions about the rule. Kept turning to his sidekick to answer any questions. Yes I am a Met fan. A very angry angry Met fan.

Ugly ugly slide by Utley I don't understand why they didn't rule it a double play

  • md - 9 years ago

Chase Utley made a memory tonight. I guess he kept his career going because he still needed to make his mark. Perhaps a new rule will be named after him.
