I have been watching NHRA races for 50 years. The main problem I see is that all the cars look the same.. Run the Pro Mod cars and the Competition Eliminator classes where there is a variety of cars. Lower the ticket prices for Seniors and families. Have some type of shuttle service so older people do not have to walk a half mile to their seat. Nostalgia racing is growing because fans can relate to those cars. It is also cheaper to attend. The variety of cars is what attracts the people. just my humble opinion.

53 years a fan, sort of. I think brand loyalty competition was one of the major drivers in this sport. The nhra in my opinion has favored one manufacturer in all those years Chevrolet/GM. Any time their favorite was getting beat even when it was just one guy who could do - Bob Glidden, they would do something from add weight to his car or change the rules. Now there is effectively only one viable Pro stock car - the Camaro. It's not very interesting or entertaining to see the same brand win over and over again. Although the change in fuel may not have been directed at crippling the only viable competition, I believe that it was the main contributing factor in their demise last year, the GM cars could get more info on how solve the problem compared to Dodge with only 2 cars running. Then there is Suzuki, they have been handicapped for years. NHRA is so slow to even up the competition when it is not one of their favorite manufacturers. I know someone will say Pro stock has no handicaps, well yes today they don't because their favorite has gained a tremendous advantage over the years. When they were being stomped on they made changes, now they are slow to do so. I'll never attend another event as long as the don't try to even the playing field.

I am a 65 year old who has been a devout fan for over 55 years so far. I think one decision made by NHRA that really took something away from the sport was the day they "chopped" the track down to only 1000' - considerably shorter than the 1320' in the full quarter mile track. I know what the intent was...however it just has never been the same. Another thing that really hurts track attendance is the ever increasing ticket price. Seniors on fixed income can't afford to come and bring anyone with them - POW !!! _ over a hundred bucks for one afternoon ! Then you see stands that are not even half filled with fans. A person with a spouse and 2 or 3 kids , simply can't even start to think about attending. I think a few things need to happen very soon. #1- lower admission across the board - especially on the first 3 or 4 days of the event. #2- get discounts for seniors for every day through an AARP promotion. #3- help offset any revenue losses incurred by the lower admission prices through a purchased pit pass for $5. #4- set up certain days for RETRO-RACIN' - old dragsters, drivers , music and food fare - maybe even a sock hop dance in 50's attire. #5 Broaden the fan base by getting televised coverage by a network that can be COUNTED ON to promote it well and to keep it's word to televise it on the advertised, pre-determined air time ( that will NOT be pre-empted by a singles tennis match that is running into extra sets - between 2 players that are hardly known to anyone else). The NHRA fan base far surpasses it in many aspects - including the number of fans, number of athletes in the event, costs involved of race teams and sponsor exposure. I think if some of these moves are implemented - all the drag strip bleachers will fill up once again ...and some people who have lost interest for various reasons will come back to what they once loved.

I raced for several years in the 50s and 60s. It got to expensive for average racers like me. So I would look forward to see the greats back again. Hope to see them soon.

I was about to write off NHRA untill I saw this. It's all good but the quarter mile is best. These squirt races are not much of a challenge. Concentrate on making the car last a quarter and it would be great compared to the squirt down the track.

That sounds like a great idea, I would to see some bigger events like Indy on the east coast. Does get pricey with travel , hotels and tickets i have traveled for 4 wide which i took my grand kids. E-town , Maple-grove and the Strip so far my bucket list is to attend all events one year maybe waiting to hit the lottery. Lol
Someone from the Nhra needs to get the Countdown to Championship game back on the Market ,which also includes cars being driven on the streets today. great for reaction time with the Tree. Nascar keeps up with new games every year with new and old drivers and cars.
I'm FIFTY PLUS and enjoy the games myself and the simulator that I used at the tracks, had my butt kicked by a little ten year old at E-TOWN couple years ago ,he beat me on the tree LOL
Maybe mixing the runs with the other class cars and bikes in the middle of pro stock and funny car run so they can be seen by more of the fans paying attention to them as much as we so the major drivers ,so we can get to know their names as well and follow the up and coming . like college football with the Heisman, Basketball with the Final Four and so on
Just a thought !!
Now for the people that has something against imports they may need to think twice. the kids are pumping their cash in these cars

I would like to see the early 60" stock classes like A,B,C, and so forth Race on Sunday buy on Monday . the way it should be !
Chuck Hall - 10 years ago
I think if it were more affordable for families, this may increase attendance.
The US Nationals for example: $5 bottle of water. $7 for a beer. Food is outrageous. Average ticket $52. $10 parking and you walk a mile.
It's a great event, but very costly.

Good Luck, but I don't See it! I believe your new TV approach has the Best merit, and that's a Reach. Everything is too expensive in these days and time is money too. Most of the Old-times Racers were simply Hot Rodders that had much more talent than they did money. They did NOT quit because they wanted too, it was because they were cast aside by Marketing concerns. By comparison, Most of today's Drivers are 'Pretty Face's and Clean Finger Nails' with Money behind them. One thing for sure....If $$$ are there, people will Race for it! But, if a Racer has too 'Quit' Racing, then he/she has to quit altogether and close the book! IF you (NHRA) want to appeal too a greater mass, get your TV and Marketing 'MORE' devoted towards the 'Sportsman' Racers! That's where the 'Racing' is!! JMO

While I like the idea, I would rather see the cars and classes like modified eliminator, the gassers, fuel altered, modified production cars, willys coupes & pickups, anglias, ect, ect. The group of cars and classes that made 60's drag racing the best decade.

well i think thats a great way to get the fans back at the track. bring back all the legend. and also bring back the old fuel altereds, get a good line up of jet cars, and a good line up of the nitro bikes. and maybe go back to the 1/4 mile. and what better place to have all this then las vegas we have a great track. and people love to come to las vegas .
Vernon Slone - 10 years ago
