They are both the best QB's of their era. Everything else is speculation in terms of who would have been better when. Fun to chat about but certainly nothing anyone can say definitively. There are good arguments on both sides
In terms of just fun speculation, As a Pats fan for 40 years, I never thought I'd see anyone come close to Montana. Brady however has inserted himself in the conversation which is more than ANY other QB can say.

Everyone can STFU about cheating BS too. all this stuff has existed in spades for the entire history of the NFL. The only reason people come down on the Pats is they are sick of seeing them being in the running every single year. 10 AFC championship games in 15 years? Yeah.. people, including the league itself, are tired of it and grasping on to anything they can to try to take the Pats down. don;t worry .. some day Brady and Belichick will retire and the rest of the league can rest easy.

Keep in mind most people that watched Montana play aren't technologically savvy enough to vote.

  • Vee - 8 years ago

Montana won all his 4 with his talent and amazing end of the game final drives. but, if Brady didn't have his kicker to billed him out, we wouldn't be even count him as a top 5

Therefore without any question JOE COOL is the one.. So all you Bostonian and Pat's just fans be happy that you have won 4 unearned SB. CHEATERS

    artex,

remember that time that the league was investigating Joe Montana for handing out stickem to his WR's and they asked to see his phone but he decided to smash it into little pieces only 4 months after he bought it because he bought a new one?

    Yeah, me neither.

  • Tim - 8 years ago

How many interceptions did Joe throw in his super bowl appearances again?

And he played when the defense could actually hit a QB.

Its montana, and its not even really close.

  • Mike - 8 years ago

What happened to Terry Bradshaw? 4-0.

  • Artex - 8 years ago

Funny people would call the Patriots cheaters. Rice admitted to using Stickum during his years. The 9ers also were hit for salary cap infractions during their runs because they ignored it. Hmmmmm.... Careful about those rocks... Both are great organizations.

Both were great, to begin with. TB has huge longevity going for him, and still going; also, many years he did not have a top receiver; also, he is playing in salary cap era, when teammates come and go; fortunately, he has had the one Coach. JM was the best of his era, without doubt and had a great team and a great receiver.
TB's era, while the rule changes will help the offense, includes bigger stronger guys, when they hit you, it's 300 pounders, not mid two hundred pounders, so you have to account for that too. This is not quite the sissy era, friends, when you monster trucks lining up against you, with all sorts of defensive schemes and instant advice from upstairs including photographs of the offense and defense instantaneously; The truth is,for me, without the direct head on competition between the two, it is very hard to choose. Also, both had great coaches, very important.
I want to mention I saw Otto Graham, ,and he was outstanding, with a great team, including Jim Brown; and Unites was also right up there, playing in touch circumstances; and one should also remember, from the older era, Sammy Baugh and Sid Luckman, not to mention Dan Fouts and even YA Tittle for several years.
we are blessed to have watch TB for so long, and were blessed to watch Joe thru great college career as well as the pros.
Lexus vs BMW or Audi? you choose.

  • Russell Young - 8 years ago

It's Montana. Add the rings up. Montana has an NCAA Championship ring in addition to his Super Bowl rings. Can Brady top that? I don't think so.

  • JIM - 8 years ago

Pats cheat a bunch of times so you can't compare them plus you can't hit brady cuz it's now the sissy league.

  • SFD - 8 years ago

People keep bringing up Rice. Definitely a factor, but remember also Joe & the Niners WON 2 SBs before Rice.

Gotta Say Tom Brady. They guy has been a Patriot for 16 years. They have won their division 13 of the 16 years. And the 3 times that they didn't....one was his first year with the Patriots which he didn't play a single game, another one was the year he was injured and didn't play a single game, the last one, they actually tied for the division lead but didn't take the crown because of the tie breaker rules. That is unmatched by anybody. So, the 2 years that Brady didn't play, what happened? They didn't win their division. The 49ers won a superbowl with the very next QB after Montana. So, it's tough to say he was the only reason the 49ers were great. Joe Montana, while one of the greatest, has the undefeated superbowl stat on his side and that is something people seem to put a lot of stock in. And for the 49er fan who made his decision partly based upon the cheating allegations, consider this....the inflation scandal didn't even occur. It was a made up scandal...I hope you've actually read the facts and not the media lies. There weren't any deflated footballs in the first place. The only other one that I'm aware of was spygate...which if you actually know what it was about, was just about the location and something that was perfectly fine until the rule change....not defending it, but just saying...not the big deal everyone says. But while we're at it....let's not forget that Jerry Rice, Montana's #1 receiver and MVP of one of the superbowls, admitted to cheating by using stickum on his gloves for most of his career. So, at best you've got a cheating scandal on both....not just one.
A lot of people simply like Joe Montana and he seems like a great guy while a lot of people hate Tom Brady, probably because he seems like an arrogant a$$ with everything a person could want. Personal feelings aside, it is pretty clear to me which QB is more of a difference maker. I'll take 13 division championships and 6 Superbowl appearances, 4 superbowl wins, and a ton of Championship games in 14 playing years. I'm a Redskins fan so I get excited if we win our division which has been only twice in decades. Brady just has the more dominant career and at a time where athletes are just better now than they were in the 80's. Show me anyone who has done more for the amount of time consistently with the level of stats as Brady and I'll re-evaluate, but it's pretty clear to me.

  • Gk - 8 years ago

Montana NEVER had to be bailed out by a kicker! Or a miracle at the other teams goal line!! Lol, Gtfoh! Joe cool all the way 4-0 fuckers! 4-0!!!

  • UK Pat - 8 years ago

Yup, agree that the modern era is more passer friendly, but Brady has been to 6 championships (cue - but that's a team statistic argument), 2 more than Montana.

And I'm really pleased to see there aren't many comments on Brady being accused of cheating etc. I think we can mostly agree that a) Deflategate was a whitewash by the NFL and b) The best WR in the 80's (and probably of all time), Rice, freely admitted to using Stickum on his gloves. And then said, "it wasn't cheating, EVERYONE was doing it"...before then saying, it wasn't right. How many catches? I doubt he would have been anything other than extraordinary without it, but to say it didn't help Joe would be a stretch.

I did laugh to see that Peyton only had 2% of the votes...

  • Paul Cimas - 8 years ago

And no PSI and the receivers with sticky substaces in his hands

  • jeff ricci - 8 years ago

Montana's best receiver Jerry Rice cheated by using stick-um his entire career. So please 49er fans please don't give me anything about cheating.

  • Steve Schmitz - 8 years ago

Montana was never accused of cheating to win. Brady, more than once. Shouldn't be in consideration

  • Paul Cimas - 8 years ago

    Montana without Salary Cap

  • Jacob - 8 years ago

I will always say Montana, obviously because im a niners fan. Montana is the most clutch Super Bowl QB I have ever seen. I mean, absolutely dead on. Also, and this will anger some people but it's the way it goes, I cannot put Brady in front of Montana because of how many times Brady has been directly or indirectly involved in cheating accusations. I'm sorry but when you are accused of it that many times, something is amiss. To the best of my knowledge, Montana was never accused of cheating in any way. That goes a long way for me.

  • Matt - 8 years ago

Great article, but correction, Brady is 4-2 in the Super Bowl, not 4-3.

  • John - 8 years ago

Most of the voters were not old enough to see REAL FOOTBALL PLAYERS ie, Unitas and the Baltimore Colts. Not much protection, rough and tough guys. Played with broker bones real bad injuries and stayed with it. Not pussyfoots of today.

  • Tom B - 8 years ago

This is the real Tom Brady and I am man enough to admit that Eli Manning owns me and should be included in this poll as he would get my vote.

  • RealityCheck - 8 years ago

Today's passing game and emphasis away from the run is negated (to what extent....who knows) by the fact that teams in Montana's era went largely intact. Joe had quite the team around him. What would Brady's stats and record look like if he had similar super stars for a decade? Like Gronk, Moss, Welker and say....Adrian Petersen as his RB. IMHO, the discussion would be over.

  • Paul R - 8 years ago

BTW.. its a shame Dan the Man has so few votes.. he was absolutely awesome.. and Kool to boot. You kids don't know what you missed. Montana, Marino, Kelly, Boomer, Warren Moon (why doesn't he receive more praise??), Aikman, Phil Sims (not so much for his passing.. he got the job done & he was a tough leader) .. this is just a sample of mostly 80's Aikman in 90's ..

  • Paul R - 8 years ago

Brady is a good QB whom I have grown to appreciate. However, the rule changes have without question inflated his numbers and extended his career. This is not his fault.. its just a fact.
I went to a KC game in 93 and watched Joe get hit and knocked to the ground after handing the ball off.. all game long.. on AstroTurf. QB's back then took a beating & shouldn't be compared to todays players.
You patriots fans.. enjoy Brady .. he is a great one... but when you have time, watch some old footage of Joe Cool in the Superbowls. There is a reason they tried to take him out all season long.

James Finlay - 1 hour ago

Brady has been to 6 Superbowls--his record is 4-2 in the big game not 4-3 and noted above."

    thank you.I caught that also..
and they get paid to write for a living.

  • M Cool - 8 years ago

Montana is the best QB of the men's league while Brady is the best QB of the sissy league :-). If Brady played under the old rules his career would be over by now and BTW, even Brady said Joe Montana was a better QB in an interview a few months back.

  • Terry Bolibaugh - 8 years ago

Joe got 3 MVP and Jerry one in the 4 unblemished SBs. A couple of Brady's SB wins might not have been wins if he didn't have a great kicker. If Joe had not been bashed even when he no longer had the ball (not allowed today He might have had at least one more. He got his broken back not on a sack if you remember. And lastly if not for the mystery tuck rule the Raiders and not Tom would have gone to the SB and probably would have won just like Brady did. I rest my case for Joe Cool as the best.

  • NFL1MLB2NBA3 - 8 years ago

Just think if Brady had the greatest wide receiver who ever lived. Brady had many years with nobodys he made look good.

  • James Finlay - 8 years ago

Brady has been to 6 Superbowls--his record is 4-2 in the big game not 4-3 and noted above.

  • Big Daddy - 8 years ago

They both are incredible Qb in their own perspective. But it was a total different era if Joe Montana played now he may have more than Brady or if Brady played back then maybe he wouldn't have enough as he has now. It's just too hard to make an accurate comparison. I like them both.
