I think it's great that you can buy second hand lenses because not everyone can afford to keep buying new. I've my fair share of second hand kit and most of it has been fantastic. The only one I had problems with was the Nikon 18-200 that had bad lens creep. As long as you buy from a reputable shop/online seller, you can't go wrong :)

The now discontinued Leica 75mm f1.4 Summilux is a legendary lens in Leica circles. Secondhand they can cost four figures, it is a lens I want and would seriously consider paying the sum these lenses demand.

Bought a secondhand Nikon 18-200 lens Good quality and sharp, but it suffered badly from lens droop, which it was probably why it was sold in the first place. Part exchanged it for a new one a year later, Nikon must have realised this was a problem, as the new lens has a lock on it, although I rarely use it.

It is a very wide ranging question. It all depends on the type of lens one would like to purchase. To date I have bought s/h lenses from £25 (a brilliant bargain), right up to £299 plus P&P.
At the time when I bought the lenses, converters, etc, I had a KonicaMinolta 5D, and it was shortly after KonicaMinolta announced that they were leaving the photographic market, and Sony still had to make its move. A few years ago I bought I bought som rs/h Minolta Af and Tamron lenses, with the prices ranging from £39.99 to £100 directly from shops when I was on holidays in the UK. I live in Ireland, and the Sony brand is relatively new. It is the CSCs that are making their mark..

I've bought 2 secondhand lenses for my Panasonic G1 a 14-140mm zoom and a 25mm prime, they were £299 each - purchased several years apart. The camera itself was new, but a superseded model so I got a discount on that as well.

I have only purchased one new lens in the last 30 years - and a variety excellent used ones at £100-£200.
The need to pay a mortgage and eat have always been more important than buying new equipment.
