I couldn't have put it better myself @Peacock, all these fans that want Mourinho to replace van Gaal are just desperate for instant success as they haven't experienced a lack of trophies like this before, but van Gaal has shown at the biggest clubs in the world that his impact can set a team up for the future.
Maybe I'm a bit biased as I'm half dutch but I believe van Gaal is the best choice for next season. Appointing Mourinho might bring us the title within a couple of years and attract some big players but we'd probably lose our high potential youth players as he rarely gives youth a chance and there's a good chance we could collapse like Chelsea soon after.

To be clear, I'm Dutch. As you guys probably know more about English managers you maybe would believe I know a bit about Dutch' ones. I can understand that after 20+ years of successes it's difficult to accept the fact that United is in a reorganization fase that most likely will take a few years. It took Fergie around 4 years if I remember Correctly to build something that would last for years. Sacking van Gaal and hyiring Mourinho will give you maybe quick success but look a bit deeper then that and take of that short term focus out for a moment. Chelsea is down and crap, sucked dry like a body that was knocked by a vampire. As was Inter after he left, as Madrid had to reinvest millions and hire most probably one of the best managers that currently is out there to fix his crap. Van Gaal builds long term organizations and set up pretty much EVERYTHING to be able to have success plus maintain stable ánd able to keep on a level like that. This man did it at Ajax, he did it at Barcelona, he did it with AZ (simular to Leicester currently but then in Holland), he did it with Bayern Munich and he'a doing it now at United. United had a Class of '96 (or was this earlier?) - which manager would have the balls to throw in Rashford and Fosu-Mensah? It's all long term success coming United' way due to him. Of course he threw away for around 300 million.... But Should I remember you Chelsea spend around 1 billion before winning the CL? PSG invested already 500+ million to build this Squad, where's this taking them? Dominating France but kicked out by +700 million Team City in a CL round that isnt even intersting yet? Fergie believes in him, van de Sar does, Rijkaard does, Guardiola, Xavi, Iniesta, Muller, Seedorf... F*ck it, you know what I mean.
We can talk hours- weeks... And you are right... united can't be(come) a 4-6 place Team waiting on title like Arsenal does for years now. I'm just wondering How many were calling to sack Fergie back in '89... Just before he grabbed that Trophy against Palace.... Wait Palace? ..........
Even if he would be sacked- the next manager will already be surprised on what van Gaal build to be ready for success the upcoming years. So unless Ancelotti or Guardiola is ready to change their minds and manage United. Stick to van Gaal- it will pay off eventually. History has shown it most likely will...
