Schindler's List presents a compelling story with some excellent acting and some engaging cinematography.
But its self-consciously grand scale and emotional manipulativeness diminishes its power.
The Pianist explicates the Holocaust by focusing with extraordinary intensity and clarity on one man rather than attempting to display everything as Schindler's List does. By attempting to show too much, too much is lost. The enormity of what happens is more elegantly and effectively shown in The Pianist.
The Pianist cuts with an excruciating sharp blade, rather than an emotional bludgeon.
I admire Spielberg's dedication to telling this story. But Polanski is exquisite.
