I want to start by putting a +1 to Mike's comment. Adding on to what he said. 25M in cap space is DEAD MONEY this season due to Galette, Evans, Browner, Colston, Hawthorne, and Bunkley. That 25M could go a long way in resigning #9 and filling holes in other places. Another good draft and we are right back in business as well.

One of the worst articles I've see.
What was the previous rumour and theory.
Saints to trade their head coach for draft picks.
Not sure why there is a continued hatred of the Saints and what they should do. The suggestions are outlandish and unfounded.

This is such a poorly researched and thought out piece, I don't even know where to begin. You state that the Saints need to be rebuilt, yet only 11 of 53 players remain from even the 2013 team, and of those 11 players, 6 of them were newly acquired that year. That means that the entire roster, except for 5 players, has been with the team for 3 seasons or less. (For the record those 5 players are Brees, Jordan, Strief, Ingram and Morstead.

But I mean, perhaps you didn't notice that they acquired Unger, Armstead and Peat specifically with the purpose of rebuilding the old and broken-down offensive line. Or that they've brought in two already very productive young WR's in Brandon Cooks and Willie Snead (and drafted another this year in Michael Thomas). Or a brand new TE group with Fleener, Hoomanwanui and Hill. Or dropped draft picks on Rankin, Davison, Richardson for the interior DL, or Kikaha, Anthony and Tull at LB, or Breaux, Swann, Williams, Bell at DB.

You seem to be laboring under the false impression that this is some old broken down team clinging to its past glories. It's not. It's one of the younger teams in the league, and 7-9 is not far from being competitive. If they're so bad then how come they played the Panthers to the wire in both games? 5 of their losses were by 6 points or less.

Pitiful article, just pitiful. Try doing a little research next time.

I like Brees. I would like to see him in another Super Bowl. He can get there in a single year with 35% of the other league teams, but unlikely with the Saints who tarnish his legacy

  • Trill - 8 years ago

Yall out yalls minds. We holding on to Brees until theres nothing left to hold on to! Get rekt, author of this article is probably a falcons fan or a fan of a team without a franchise qb.

Brees can't play defense. Let him walk. We can sign Tim tebow. He can play better defense and play on special teams as well. We will have a QB who can do it all and at probably 1% of brees salary. And we'll stop everyone complaining about brees at that point since his poor defense won't be costing us games

I am not sure why the author of this article thinks the Saints aren't even close to competing for the NFC South title. I don't think they're as far away as he thinks they are...

If they let him go something is wrong. The team wouldn't thrive as well as they do now and they know this. There is NO one that could take his place. Brees us a nice man. I'm a die hard fan. You NEEd Brees to thrive blieve me.

Seriously? top 5 offense you think that's cause they can put just anyone back there? There are teams that aren't rebuilding that can't claim a top 15 anything. I mean, Brees is all that separated them from a 2-14 season last year,... they have NO RUN game and TECHNICALLY SPEAKING no defense,.. so you think they should let the one working piece walk? The only thing that is a GOOD reason to let him walk, is getting fed up with the defense and go to a team that just needs a qb. I'm a saints fan, but that guy is too good, he's easily better than Brady, he's tying him and passing him in records and is a year younger and hasn't had the post seasons to pad his stats. there's a reason Brees is worth a lot,... And the only thing separating them from a Superbowl appearance is the defense,... I'm sorry does that actually make sense to you? do you really think a team who only needs a functional defense to win a Superbowl (2009 defense was ranked 16th) should just let a HOF QB walk cause you think a QB that actually elevates Recievers (see Graham, Meachem, Moore, Thomas, etc post Drew Brees) is paid too much in a league where QB's average half of his stats? Do you? Is that a professional opinion? That would be pretty ridiculous. I'll assume you're being obtuse, or don't really have any idea what a drew brees is in the first place.

The Saints are not as far away from contending for the NFC South as this article says. They have a young defense that could surprise some and still one of the best offenses in the league. The writer clearly doesn't understand the dynamics at play here. If the Saints let's Drew walk it does not help them rebuild any faster. They will still have the same amount of draft picks. True they would be a worse team which would equal higher draft picks but that doesn't always mean better players. They theoretically would have more money to get free agents, but free agents are usually players in the middle of their careers that want to go to a contender and by letting Brees walk you have effectively let that ship sail and the free agents you do attract will be on the downside of their careers by the time you are back in contention... assuming you ever will be because now you have the task of finding a franchise QB. The only way letting Brees walk is if the coaching staff believes Grayson is the second coming of... well Brees

Man they better not let that man go he is the best quarterback in Saints history not alone one of the top 5 quarterbacks in NFL history he's a super bowl champion and a future hall of famer and ranks top 5 all time in most quarterback stats in terms of yards, td passes, and pass completions.

Totally agree with Fike, the ignorance of salary cap dynamics by the writer is a red flag for this article. A $100 million 4-year deal would NOT "actually be a pay cut for Brees, who’s scheduled to make $30 million this season," because that information is incorrect: he is NOT making $30 million this season - that's just his Cap number, NOT his salary. The Saints have plenty of cap space next year with Loomis-nomics in full effect - the cap problem this year is the dead money that came from that Junior Gallette debacle.
If the defense can only stay healthy (I agree again that depth is the real issue here) and avoid miscommunications (which is why a veteran, Laurinaitis, instead of a rookie, Anthony, will be calling the defense this season), there's no reason to expect a sub-.500 season again. There's definitely playoff potential this year, and, if we can keep the O-line sound 1) in the absence of Evans, 2) after the contract renegotiations with Unger and 3) with the expected retirement of Strief, the Saints should be Super Bowl favorites come the 2017 season.

  • Steven - 8 years ago

Then replace drew with who? He still is a top 5 nfl qb pay the man his stats from last season back it up

  • Fike - 8 years ago

The author has a poor grasp of the salary cap and an even poorer grasp of how close the Saints are to the playoffs.

The Saints currently have a shade over $126,000,000 on the cap. The anticipated cap number for 2017 is $166 million, putting the Saints $40 million under the cap as a very conservative estimate. That's before cuts, contract extensions and new contracts. For GM Loomis, you might as well not even have a cap if you give him $40 million to work with. They still have C Max Unger to lock up long term as well. That's more than enough to sign Brees to what he wants and a half dozen Pro Bowl players if that's what Loomis wants to do. It's nothing to take money against the cap, convert it to a "signing bonus" and voila, cap room for up front cash.

In the NFL, the difference between 7-9 and 10-6 is very small. At no point were the Saints out-classed last season despite numerous holes and players signed as stop-gaps. Injuries took a toll on a very thin defense at a rate never seen before in New Orleans. Depth is still an issue at some positions and pass rush is going to have to be generated by scheme, rather than player. This would not be the first time we see the Saints field a top defense a year off being historically terrible with basically the same roster.

As long as Brees is a Saint, they will always be a threat.

To start, Drew Brees said just a couple months ago that he would not play for another Coach or Team. Sean Payton just signed an extension. So with those options out a the way. The only thing that stands is if The Saints just let him go. NOT GOING TO HAPPEN. Brees is going to stay. We've already built the team around him.Noone has seen our brand new Joe Vitt Defense. Also our new offense and WRS and TEs. We're going to take the south this year. Who Dat!

  • Brunson - 8 years ago

You have it backwards. Brees should part ways with the Saints. It is hurting his legacy staying there. Brees is blamed for the lack of success to some degree even though he is playing with the worst Def in the history of the game statistically. No current or past QB would have found anymore success there than Brees has.
There a few teams, e.g. Den or Texans, that he would instantly make a favorite to win a super bowl and further cement his legacy. Brees has had a poor supporting cast, but still posted the 3rd best QBR in the league last season. What does the national media say about him, Brees is in decline. Clearly his numbers don't show it or even his long ball accuracy. Its the struggles of the D and even special teams that makes them think that.
