I like this as yet another tool in determining where to receive care. The ratings should drive questions in selection not serve as answers. Plus, I'm always amazed at those who says the ratings aren't fair because our patients are sicker, need more care, You would expect to see that disparity for all the major systems, but you don't. It's easy to try and poke holes in ratings but this methodology seems to be harder to game than most.

I'm not saying the Star Rating is "right/perfect", but my goodness people we have to start somewhere... And the predictable "blame the messenger" sort of response is almost funny at this point... For all of you who wanted "healthcare run like a business" - welcome to the real world...

Hospitals are too complex to be represented by a single grade or star rating.

Interestingly, none of the hospitals in Maryland have a rating, possibly because of Maryland's All Payer Rate Setting system. So, the data in addition to overall being fairly useless is even less helpful for those of us in Maryland.

The rating system does not take many relevant factors into account and penalizes hospitals that serve more indigent and chronically ill patients. It also does not fully reflect the impact of the volumes of procedures completed. I know the good hospitals in my area based on experience. The data may serve as a guide, but cannot provide a definitive rating.
