It was in the year 2004 that I first had the privilege of visiting Sri Satya Sai Educational Institutions in Puttaparthi. The primary purpose of education there is to make the individual develop his personality by the pursuit of spiritual and moral discipline.Today academic excellence in education has increased but it's salutary effect in human behaviour is decreasing.Today the education being pursued is only secular that is value neutral.Mere secular education is not enough. It must be supplemented by spiritual education.Secular education is for making a living whereas spiritual education is for reaching the goal of life.A harmonious blend of spiritual and secular education is the need of the hour.It is in order to impart true, ideal education and mould the students as ideal citizens for the service of the country that the Satya Sai Educational Institutions have been set up.Being inspired by the great work being done there I started writing books on moral and human values for the trust so as to be a part of the work done for promoting human values.

Career choice was my own after working in different disciplines I had chosen HR as I was passionate about people interaction and helping others. The progress on the other hand was a combination of self-motivation and also owe it to my manager who was my mentor and inspiration and who eventually guided me to become a leader like herself. Also working for the WB for nearly 12 years in itself was a big inspiration.

Career choice was from personal experience, but my progress was mostly motivated though my manager. A leader should not only motivate but guide a person in the right path. After exploring many fields of work I settled for HR as I found my interest lied in helping and interacting with people. After meeting my mentor, I was inspired to become a leader.

The environment around us play a crucial role in defining our character, shaping our personality and building our compass of moral ethics. For me, my parents and my sister played a vital role in shaping who I am today. It depends on everyone's circumstances, but I am glad I was brought up under the influence of a teacher and a philosopher.

I think the question might be better split into two options: (I) choice; (ii) progress. Additionally in reference to one of the comments not everyone even got to the university level education, so for them professor would be irrelevant. Thus it might be good to split by education level to as it different stages different people influence, help or hinder our progress.
Lastly only for a few people career is one unitary choice. We more often know who we want to be than what we want to be. I suspect for majority it's more like a ladder or a Bayesian process where information gets updated as one ages, learns, gets more experience, sees new horizons. However, we put so much pressure on people by telling them that they always should know what they want to be, which sometimes makes them even internalize fake aspirations, which in many ways could be suboptimal.

I was 8 years old when Ethiopia suffered the big drought period, and it's shortly after that, that I realized that my father was working in an organization that was helping people in need - The UN. That's when I knew I wanted to work in development, to be able to help people to get out of poverty.

When I was a child, my parents encouraged me to believe in myself and have big dreams for my future. I was constantly reminded that "education is my first husband". The inspiration I got from parents served as my guiding principles throughout my educational and career choices. I am forever grateful to my parents for the vision they had for me at a time when the prevailing culture was to marry girl children off as soon as the reach puberty.
I have tried to replicate this encouragement whenever I have the opportunity to meet young girls particularly in African countries where for cultural reasons girl children are encouraged to marry early.

I chose university professor. But I suspect for me and people who answered similarly, we could be biased because we managed to attain university level education. What about those who only finished secondary education? Would their decisions have changed if they too would have been influenced by university professors?
