I'm a southern gal, a yoga teacher so hugging is natural and normal. What is not natural is mandatory, peer pressured, forced hugs! Sometimes the yoga world thinks it can solve all problems, ailments, mental issues with its peace, love, harmony, kumbaya mantras. Never taking into consideration an individual students past or even present experiences. Would you make a rape victim allow herself to be hugged by someone she finds intimidating? A person who has suffered child abuse, a woman who was abused by her partner? Hugging should be voluntary, natural and most importantly between 2 consenting adults, not forced or gutted into by the person we may be looking to for healing and therapy!
