My favorite from childhood was
It's beginning to rain
"Victory in Jesus" will bring the waterworks to my eyes every time! To be honest, there are very few hymns that won't cause the tears to roll down my cheeks. Spending my formative years as a preacher's daughter was a great blessing. Now, if you had asked the teenage me what I thought of being the oldest of a preacher's 5 children was like, you would have heard a reversal of ideas from my response as the Granny that I am today. Now, everyone grab a hymnal and lets blend our voices in a few of those good old psalms that we love and remember from our youth! A one, and a two and a........let's sing! ????????
Hallelujah, Amen! ????????
LaBreeska Lewis - 7 years ago
All of the songs I truly love but The old rugged cross is my favorite because for a man that gave his life for me on that tree so that I could have life for eternity when no other world ....The words speaks volumes to me in so many ways
Rebecca Duckworth - 7 years ago
I voted for Amazing Grace but if it had been an option I could have voted for

Lift High The Cross is probably my all time favorite, but Amazing Grace and Onward Christian Soldiers are close second place.

Not a hymn but love " Mary, Did You Know?"
Favorite hymn is St. Patrick's Breastplate (I bind unto myself today)
Ellen Cole - 7 years ago
My father was a church organist and choir director...and he was born in Wales. The Welsh are known for music...especially hymns. This question has way to many answers for me! There is a Welsh hymn titled "Rhys", which is a particular favorite, with beautiful words and harmonies. "Here I Am, Lord" made me cry for years after we chose it for my mother's funeral...but I now love it as a personal prayer. Hymns are a powerful spiritual gift and, like bible verses, often speak differently to us at different times. They frequently tell us what we need to hear.
Loretta - 7 years ago
I voted for Great is Thy Faithfulness -- because The LORD is faithful, always, even when we are not! But I would have to say my favorite hymn is Nearer My God To Thee. It is a hymn that speaks to me as a place of rest and of our eternal resting place.
There in my Father’s home, safe and at rest,
There in my Saviour’s love, perfectly blest;
Age after age to be, nearer my God to Thee,
Nearer, etc.
(This is the sixth verse later added by Edward Henry Bickersteth Jr.)
Jackie - 7 years ago
When I hear those bagpipes start on Amazing Grace, I get goosebumps that start at my toes and go up to my scalp... maybe it's the Scottish blood, or maybe I was a piper in another life, but that just grabs hold of me and doesn't let loose until the end. I love the arrangement Il Divo did of that song. Check it out on youtube. It's amazing. When the baritone sings his part, it makes me smile from my liver. (what movie??)
Sharon Sachs - 7 years ago
Aren't we blessed to have this great timeless legacy of stirring hymns? I was so blessed to see It is Well With My Soul mentioned so frequently.
I smiled with joy as I read these comments and hummed each beloved hymn!
Many of my favorites were mentioned. My very favorite is "To God Be The Glory". I love the stirring chorus :
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the earth hear His voice.
Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!
Let the people rejoice.
Oh come to the Father thru Jesus the Son
And give Him the glory, Great things He has done!
Judith Wester - 7 years ago
My favorite is Nearer My God to Thee
All of the songs on the list set a mood. Some are meditative, some reflective, others are of joy and thankfulness while many offer praise to God. Many hymns offer comfort and love but regardless of
their purpose they help us to appreciate God in our lives. Loved this and loved reading everyone's
comments!

My favorite is "Light the Fire". It's not new, but also not as old as the choices you listed. Those are all good ones that hit the heart...and the eyes at times.
Karen - 7 years ago
Victory in Jesus is to be sung at my funeral, but I love Blessed Assurance, Rock of Ages, The Old Rugged Cross, and Amazing Grace. They remind me of my father when he and I would go to church when I was a young girl. My mother's and grandmother's favorite was In the Garden. I enjoy that as well. Too many to narrow down.
Dawn - 7 years ago
Any old hymn but one that stands out is 'Standing on the Promises of God' - Because as a child my favorite part of Sundays was when I would go to church with my grandparents and when they were not up in front singing in the choir, I loved being next to my grandfather who came over from the Netherlands and listening to him sing the 'parts' with his accent. I loved listening to the songs in 'Dutch' as that is how I knew his accent. I would just hold his hand and lean into him so I could listen to just him sing.
Kim Tapley - 7 years ago
My favorite is not on the list. A Mighty Fortress Is Our God; Lest we never forget how mighty the Lord really is!
Anne Greenwald - 7 years ago

Susan Cox - 7 years ago
I voted for "Amazing Grace", but I have to say my favorites are:

My favorite hymn, 'All Hail the Power of Jesus Name' wasn't on the list, but my second favorite, 'Just a Closer Walk With Thee' was. So I selected it. When I was growing up, my Mom had an album by Tennessee Ernie Ford, and 'Just a Closer Walk With Thee' was one of the songs on it. He sang it beautifully. It makes my heart warm when singing it, and also makes me a little nostalgic for my younger days.

Our Father, It is well with my soul, God I need you now, First.
I wanted to check all of them and include many that other friends have listed. Hymns have beautiful words that always bless me.
My real favorite is "Wonderful Grace of Jesus", but since that wasn't on the list I chose "Blessed Assurance", which is my second favorite :)
That's a great list, and I chose my favorite of those listed. But I have many other favorite hymns, including "Be Thou My Vision", "Come, Ye Disconsolate", "My Faith Has Found a Resting Place", etc. I could make a long list of hymns I love.
I also love, love, We are standing on Holy Ground!!!
Be Still, My Soul
O Love That Will Not Let Me Go
Now Shall My Inward Joys Arise
It Is Well!
In Christ Alone
My absolute favorite is #444 in the Trinity Hymnal (they aren't given names). But "The Deep Deep Love of Jesus" is a close second.
I chose Amazing Grace from the list but my true favorites are It Is Well With My Soul and I Surrender All. Love, love ,love these hymns!
I Danced in the Morning /Simple Gifts
Lord of the Dance
I cannot really say that I have a favorite, but It is Well With My Soul.
