Every year we rent a lake cottage on Donnell Lake in Vandalia, Michigan in August for the week. All our children and grandchildren are there throughout different times of the week, spending the nights and friends for the day. So many wonderful, cherished memories are made...swimming, cookouts, meals together, laughter, volleyball, boccie, croquet, boating, tubing, campfires, smores (of course), relaxation. Even our goldens and bulldog loves to swim and spend time with family. We are so blessed beyond measure...thank you Lord!

  • Sarah M - 7 years ago

Nothing more fun for kids than playing in the water...the pool, the sprinkler, the water table, the Beach, the lake...all gave us hours of fun!

  • Mallory - 7 years ago

Three things I enjoyed this summer were:
-Spending time with family and attending church- which is rare as a night shift RN on weekends.
-Visiting the Mercantile and getting to visit the lodge. My favorite aspect apart from seeing Walter was the wild horses! Thanks PW for opening up your home for us to visit!
    -Learning embroidery from my grandmother.

  • Sara G - 7 years ago

The best part of summer is being able to sit outside and enjoy the warm weather with a cold drink and my chickens clucking around me. So peaceful!

  • Rae Ann - 7 years ago

4 generations of the family came together to freeze corn. My 83 father-in-law ( the man who spit a seed on to the ground and grow the most beautiful plants, 4 out of 5 of my husbands siblings, 6 out of 13 grandchildren, and 2 out of 9 great grandchildren. The baby (18 days old) strapped to mom or gma's chest slept through the 6 hours of husking, cooking, cutting and freezing of 418 packs of corn. 2 year old big sister helped by keeping us all laughing and smiling. Oh what a day.

Can't wait for Sunday when all come together again to make salsa and soup!

  • Tim W - 7 years ago

The best thing about summer was spending time with the grandkids, ages 8 & 5, and cookouts. Watching them play outside chasing bubbles to running after their dog. Then in the evening cooking out on the grill and taking in all the smells and sounds of Summer.

  • Mary Eckard - 7 years ago

I broke my femur August of last year and this year I'm still hobbling around with a cane. So we haven't been able to travel except to visit family nearby. I was also glad to be able to get back to quilting and cooking for my husband. He has been my rock and caregiver thru all of this. I don't now what I would have done without him. I''ve had surprise visits from my granddaughters who live far away and that also meant a lot to me. So now I'm looking forward to a better summer next year.

  • Cassie Brooks - 7 years ago

I changed jobs in June and was able to have good bit of time off work in July. We made a trip to the beach for a week and spent may days at our local public pool and community parks, and did fun crafting activities with my daughter. We ate watermelon on our back porch and grilled steaks on the grill. We visited our family a couple of weekends that live on the lake and took their new puppy out in their canoe and went swimming! Iove summer and it was a wonderful one!

  • Leslie - 7 years ago

The best thing was seening my 2 grown sons at our home with their friends - we had geat times cooking together, laughing, watching movies at night and breakfasts in the morning!

  • Cheri Peine - 7 years ago

We travel in our RV as often as possible. We attended two large rallies (March in Tucson, AZ) and (June in Elkhart, IN) then spent time in KY and OH where we met and vacationed with one of our sons and his family. We have taken several other shorter trips closer to home as well.

  • Kimberli Maddox - 7 years ago

  • Janice Kerner - 7 years ago

Summer just makes you feel good. To get up in the morning and see the sun and hear the birds singing makes life worth living. Seen many, many summers and have enjoyed every one of them.

  • Heidi - 7 years ago

Best part of summer is NOT homeschooling and YES to hanging at the lake.

  • KarenJ - 7 years ago

The end. This summer has been nonstop laundry and cleaning and cooking. Between the constant change of tenants in our rental cottage and all the family from the north who feel our house by the ocean is a hotel... I haven't been to the beach even once and it's only 12 minutes away! Hurrah for September!!! (Dot to mention having the tourists clear out and being able to park when I go into town!)

  • Sarah - 7 years ago

The best thing about summer was going up north and spending time on the lake!

  • Michelle Van Wynen - 7 years ago

The very best thing about this summer is that I became a Grammy! My firstborn had his firstborn in August.

  • Heather - 7 years ago

I love that the long days mean more outside time with my kids!

  • Anita Faulkner - 7 years ago

A week at a northern Wisconsin lake last week was the highlight of our summer because our two daughters and six grandchildren joined us. At 64, I went kayaking for the first time - a really big deal considering I am walker-dependent.

  • Susan - 7 years ago

The best thing about this summer was finally getting to see my niece after she came back home following a year abroad in Japan for college!

  • Jennifer MacKInnon - 7 years ago

This summer had some highes and it had quite a few extreme lows but my favourite memories of this summer are picking berries, any berries, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries and then eating them, still warm from the sun.

We are still picking wild blackberries here as we have had a warm dry two months in the Pacific Northwest. They taste like summer, it is sublime.

  • Rebecca L - 7 years ago

This summer has been quite a challenge for me. I lost my only sister in July. My daughter is going through a divorce. And...hurricane Harvey hit us here in Houston. Normally one might want to throw in the towel and give up. But, I will say the best part of my summer has been being blessed to spend glorious time with my beautiful grandchildren and being very blessed that we did not suffer any losses or damage during the hurricane.

  • Rosie - 7 years ago

We started our homeschool June 19th so we spent time indoors learning together. We also enjoyed spending time with friends during our three day weekends. We are just going on a week long trip starting Labor Day.

  • Carolyn - 7 years ago

My summer was full of setting goals with my 25-year-old daughter. I've begun teaching her some easy recipes to try. I've collected so many recipes I probably could use a huge file cabinet and secretary to keep track of it all! We've decided to try our hands at jewelry making and coming across a lot of stunning pieces. We hope to gather enough materials and supplies to start soon and next summer we can sell at flea markets and craft fairs. I love going to those kind of places. It's so wonderful to feel that excitement again. This summer has been fulfilling God's love and blessings to all.

  • Shirley Gray - 7 years ago

In July we went to Vancouver Island for a family wedding, then carried on around the island visiting family and friends.
August we went to Alberta for a Canadian Snowbird reunion. A bund of us spend winter in the south US and met in the summer. Snowbirds that can't go any more joined us as well. So much fun.
On the way home we stopped a 2 different hot spring resorts.

Hope everyone had a great summer!

  • Doris Bond - 7 years ago

My husband and I took our youngest son to see the Royals play this summer, and they won! My son suffered a severe brain injury last spring and his heart stopped for 5 minutes. We promised him last year when he was in the rehabilitation hospital, watching the Royals games from a hospital room, that we would take him to a Royals baseball game. It was a special way to celebrate the one year anniversary of him surviving the brain injury, for him to be able to sit in the stadium, eat hot dogs, and cheer the Royals to a win! We are so very thankful to God for His continuing healing of our son Dan.

  • Sue Kimmet - 7 years ago

My husband's family (immediate siblings, 9 of them and some children) had a family reunion as we try to do every few years. It was my turn to choose where the get-together takes place, some where new each time, and so we went to my home country. We mostly live in Montana but I grew up in northern California and southern Oregon, a first for most of us. Frosting on the cake, we attended the Oregon Shakespearean Festival in Ashland, Oregon. I highly recommend it!!!

  • Jean E Colson - 7 years ago

My hubby (if 50 years) and I have become politically active, marching, making signs, attending rallies. We are demobstrating to protect our pristibe Florida mangrive "kutchen" rather than let a millionaire developer put up 145' buildinfs, etc. We are standing up fir a pair of Bald Eagles. We stand in prayer vigil at a local mosque every Friday since end of January (yep including our long, hot & miserable summer Fridays.) It's been the most memorable summer of our lives @ age 77 & 74!

Had to have an unexpected spine surgery, which was successful, and my baby sister (63) came to sray during recooping time. Even though we didn't go anywhere but to the emergency room day after I came home, I fell. She got to ride in the back of an amulance, a first for her :). We talked, played games on the computer, read, watched youtube TV and movies and laughed till we could hardly breath. Best unexpected visit ever, had not seen her in about 6 months.
Sounds odd, but the visit was wonderful.

  • Stella Scott - 7 years ago

I had posted, that I had family fun with cookouts, and just visiting, with each other. I am thankful for my family and have been a special blessing to my husband and me. I pray for those in Texas and other flooded areas, cause some of them won't have a holiday this weekend or possibility of not having a family member around. I enjoy your cooking show, and have almost watched your kids grow up. Be Happy and see you in the fall when cooler, with my Mercantile shirt on. Yeah.

Hey everyone, your summers all sound lovely. Mine was less exciting; 2 years of illness I was finally partly diagnosed and spent the last 2 months in treatment. The steroid part is over at least now working on getting the blubber down!

Here in England the weather hasn't been great all summer but 2 weeks away with the husband is coming up and looking forward to time with him and chilling out.

    Have a great time everyone.
