I am appalled by some of the comments here. "They knew they were having a kid within 24 hours"?!! How could they have known that and "waited in the lobby"?!! You obviously don't realize that advanced labor could come on unexpectedly and suddenly!! Please do your research before commenting on what you don't know if you never experienced labor!! Secondly, he offered the ambulance AFTER keeping them waiting for 6 minutes which for a woman in advanced labor is already an eternity and could've been during those 6 minutes that she delivered the baby IN THE CAR!! The officer should've called the ambulance before detaining them for the 6-7 minutes that he did! All that is required here from the police department is a normal apology that this was dealt with incorrectly and will be addressed and corrected in the future.

Scott, it's interesting how 1800+ people feel one way and barely 320 feel the other way. He is as above the law as any cop speeding to a legitimate emergency. I've seen cops do close to 80mph on Rt 9 just to back up they're pal who pulled over some old man for a seatbelt infraction etc. if Speeding is putting people at risk then even cops can't speed at irresponsible speed. (Don't give me the lights & sirens hogwash)

Its funny how 1800 plus of you think your above the law and cause its an emergency that you can disregard the safety of others as well as yourself. This officer was 100% correct in his actions and offered to call an ambulance numerous times which would have been the best, safest and fastest way to get the expectant mother to the hospital that is a half hour from Lakewood. The driver refused all offers for an ambulance to be called. The ignorance shown thru all of the comments is astounding the driver got what he deserved and should be thankful he only got one ticket cause he could have easily gotten reckless or careless driving.

The question should have been- Was the Howell Police officer correct in doing his job ?
Why do so many feel they are above the law ? Why can a person that does wrong and breaks the law admit to it ?

He wasn't wrong in delaying or issuing the ticket he was wrong and Should be reprimanded for not calling An ambulance. He put the father the mother and the baby in harm's way by allowing him to drive away.

Josh, Why shouldn't we stop every cop speeding 80 and 90 mph during an emergency. And you see them doing excessive speed all the time. Aren't they putting people at risk? Or an Ambulance for that matter? Do you think if a deer jumped out at a cop doing 80mph he/she wouldn't cause an accident? Perhaps every first responder deserves to be ticketed for going over the speed limit. If life & death emergencies don't warrant speeding same rule for all.

You're all wrong. The question was if he was right for DELAYING the couple in order to issue a summons. Not the legality of the summons itself! He clearly shouldn't have held them back! How about giving the ticket by mail?!

People are really stupid. He was doing 80mph in a 40-45. He 100% deserved the ticket. Yes it’s an emergency situation but don’t do twice the speed limit. 50-60 is way more acceptable and safer. The cop was not rude in any way. I don’t even understand how anyone could think he was rude. He asked several times if they want an ambulance they said no. They knew they were going to have the kid within 24 hours y wouldn’t they be prepared. Maybe even wait in the hospital loby? Instead they think speeding there is the better thing. If that cop didn’t stop them and they got into an accident at those speeds I’m sure they would both be seriously injured if not worse. The only think I could think that would have made this faster would be ambulance or if the cop said he would follow to a hospital to give the ticket

@Joey. But this wasn’t a mistake by the cop. He wasn’t driving 80 mph putting everyone’s life at risk. He wasn’t the one who repeatedly refused medical care.
So let’s admit who made the mistake, the driver

  • Joey - 6 years ago

You could admit to a mistake
Thats what we are always teaching our children in school and at home
I dont know why police can never do that!!!
