Alcantara is also known in the fashion industry as Ultra Suede. It is used by top designers, is durable and by the way is non-flammable and one reason it is a preferred material used in cars. When you walk into Saks Fifth Avenue it will NOT be called fake suede, it’s Ultra Suede. The author should call it what it is.

I agree with Brad and Mike. Alcantara was in the interior roof that was shown and I even sat in a first run of the model 3 that an employee owned and it was Alcantara on the roof. If they change to this cheaper looking crap, what else are they going to change? The first runs of the M3 is being touted as a luxurious premium interior. Changes like these are Looking less and less like this is not as premium and luxurious as being promised.

Fred, your bias is obviously showing. Pretty weak of you to word the poll options in this way so that there isn't even a pretense of objectivity. If you had added an option like "I don't mind either way, but Tesla should have communicated the change" you would have a lot more credibility.

When peoples are disappointed in a vehicle because of perceived inferiority of cloth vs sued like materials you know they have bigger problems in life.

I think the elite bs is typical....battery car has interior wussy decorator problems? It's a way to get to work at Google when your Mom can't take you.

The previous suede material looked expensive, felt luxurious and was easy to maintain and clean as opposed to the new cloth material that looks "cheap" or at a minimum "very ordinary" plus the new cloth traps dirt and foreign materials in the weave. It’s strange how they list the choices as “fake” suede and “new" Textile, why not “Synthetic" Suede and “Cheap" Cloth?

They should qualify the poll by whether someone is actually buying the car and cares or if they just don’t care. I currently have a new Model X and new Model S plus two reservations for model 3’s. Both my other Tesla’s have the alcantara headliners in them and the materials receive compliments from friends seeing the cars for the first time. I am strongly leaning towards canceling our orders due to Tesla not deliving an equivalent product to the one they have been promoting the last 5 months. It may seem like a small detail but purchasing a Tesla is not one done typically for utilitarian transport but rather an emotional purchase. After Tesla says to loyal customers like myself that have supported the Tesla brand, have already ordered a car and are now only a week or two from delivery that this degrade was always their plan it is a slap in the face.

I prefer the old fake suede because I have owned a few cars that have had cloth headliners that tend to droop after several years. So essentially, I think the fake suede with the solid backing would add value to the car since it wouldn't be susceptible to drooping.

Well I would prefer the one that holds up the best and has the most sound proofing capable.I also think it would be cool if I could pick my model 3 at The factory and make a vacation of it and give a proper test drive.Just a pipe dream!

The new material looks like an improvement to me, and I'm always all for making vehicle interiors easier to clean. The uproar over the change doesn't make sense to me.

Agree with Mike, its not that the new textile material is necessarily inferior to Alcantera, It's that Tesla showed this to the auto Press and including it in their early production cars that set the expectation. Tesla wasn't transparent with the change and acts as if the customer loyality is a "given". Won't be like that for the rest of the ICE buyers who have to be "converted".

I thought all the interiors were black????
When I ordered mine there was no color option. I would rather not get black.

I think people are upset at Tesla’s lack of transparency. Sometimes surprises are good. Like making your car faster with an update....but lack of communication can cause frustration.... putting down a deposit on model 3 was like buying a presale condo that you can’t see the interior layout or features... just a view of the outside...put your money down and hope it will be as great as you imagine...with Tesla it likely will be!

I think Tesla switched materials on the S, X and 3 because Alcantara does not wear well, looks bad and discolored quickly after new and is hard to clear. Below is a good video on this material - https://twitter.com/theteslalife/status/951920099098746881
